I don't put hot stuff straight into the fridge (my Mum's a cook and taught me not to). Cover over the food and leave it to cool. If you put it into the fridge hot it rises the temperature in the fridge so everything else in there won't be stored at the correct temperature for a while...

It is harmful for the fridge, first of all. And it doesn't make much difference for the food, but if the food is steaming, covering it to put it in the fridge will make it watery or less crunchy. So it's better to let it reach room temperature, no bacteria develop until then - I' m not saying you should leave it outside a couple of days!

You should allow foods to cool before putting them in any covered container. Not because the temperature is raised in the fridge, the temp on a fridge is raised more by the constant opening of the door. It will raise the temp a bit, but it is a negligable amount.
The reason for allowing food to cool before covering them is that warm foods will maintain their heat longer in a covered container and will continue to cook, which will increase the amount of condensation in the closed container, which will create a soupy mess of whatever food you are trying to keep.

I don't know about the bacteria. I have been taught not too as it spoils the fridge as it messes with the temperature control of the fridge.

Oh?
Actually I've heard the reverse.
That u should let the food come to room temp before refrigerating.
That, basically, is to reduce the load on the fridge.
I don't know which is more effective to prevent the bacteria.

Actually you should cool the food as quickly as possible to avoid any bacterial growth. This means it should go directly into the refridgerator regardless of the fact that it will bring up the temp slightly in the fridge.
