The best tax software is to be found at your friendly, knowledgeable, local CPA. A good CPA will have a program that can handle anything whilst the programs on the consumer market are over-priced. Even the free ones. I work for a CPA and did my taxes using one of the free services this year (my employer does not do efiling yet and I wanted to do it quickly). Two errors, one on state and one on federal, both of which I caught because I am a tax professional. Total savings $1,650.
Remember, the "guarantees" offered by the boxes are only of any use if you get audited. If they fail to pick up all the deductions you are entitled to, how are you going to know unless you know the Tax Code?
The firm I work for has no advertising other than a standard entry in Yellow Pages. We have gained more clients in the past year from TurboTax or similar than from any other source.

I read all the answers first on this one, and I would have to agree with Skip. He is right on. They all claim to get you the most deductions. TaxCut is H & R Blocks version. There is also Turbo tax as well as many other places you can find on the web. You have spent one full year in paying taxes and paying on medical, mortgages, etc. Do you think you need to skimp now on cheap software or even your own time in order to get some of your money back? Take the time and either call a CPA, a Tax Professional and go over your taxes and make sure you have all the paperwork handy. They can add/subtract etc. But lack of paperwork will delay the process. And remember they have many clients, but they want to be able to give each one suberb treatment. But they don't want to spend hours on the phone doing research that you could have done.

I used Turbo Tax last year. It was easy and saved time. I always did my own taxes before that but didn't have the extra time to do it last year. I will use it again this year.
----I have always done my own taxes. Several years ago, my husband insisted I must have done something wrong. We went to a good tax preparer, it cost is a bunch of money & I had done everything correctly, we did not get an extra dime back & it cost us. So, I have been doing it myself ever since. We own a home, have stocks & mutual funds, kids, daycare expenses, etc. It really isn't as difficult as most CPAs will have you think. When my husband was young, he had his EZ form done by a CPA - what a waste.

They ALL have issues. If you have a couple W-2's and nothing else, and I do mean noything else, then any of them will work for you but if you have student loan interest or own a home then your better off letting some one do them for you. H&R Block, Liberty Tax Service and Jackson Hewitt charge WAY to much but you can find a small, local company thats been around if you look hard enough and you won't pay a ton of money.
