Nano materials play a major role in science for a couple reasons; one, 'nano' is a hot word in research so if you can say your research is 'nano' you may have a better chance at funding (this may not be so much true anymore, but was a few years back). Two, nano materials take advantage of properties of nano-scaled aspects of the material, it does not mean that the material has to be nano-scaled itself. These properties can often be exploited for some purpose. Examples include water and stain repellents. The reason that nano-scaled properties can vary so much from larger scales is that it is approaching the molecular level. Individual molecules or small groups of molecules do not behave the same way as the bulk material. Hope this helps...

Nano-technology is a research item right now. So many people seem to think it's reality. There are no nano-bots, nano-machines or nano anythings in the real world and there probably won't be for a long time. I'm not sure what you mean by nano materials. They may first have medical applications but I'm not sure I want a million little things in my body without a lot of research.

Think about it.. in surgery they can make smaller incisions.. smaller computers... smaller everything.
