(i don't believe that) just typed out an answer for you and deleted it by mistake!! AAAAAGGGGGHHHHH!!!!!!!
Here I go again!!

Firstly,
Is your number in the phonebook? If yes - change to xd/nc.
Have you given consent for companies to call you? If so - contact them and advise them you no longer want this to happen.

Secondly,
If with BT (don't know about other companies) contact 0800 800 150 with your account number and ask for Choose To Refuse. This is free for 1 month then if required 3.35/month or 10.05/quarter. This service allows you to block specific numbers from calling you. IT WORKS!!!

Alternatively and for the future:
Register with the telephone preference service (this stops marketing calls coming through to your number). That service is FREE. Contact them on 0800 398 893 or the following website:

hope helps!

When a person calls you from BSNL (India) one rupee coin operated box, the number will not be shown in caller ID. This was a mistake by Govtt till 2003. Now a days most of districts Bsnl networks have corrected it and PCO numbers are correctly shown. (2) The mobile company allow us to debar our number being shown to other party to whom we call, after taking special monthly fees to use this function. This facility is available in few mobile company and only to post paid customers.

When a person calls from Private exchange installed by BSNL in some areas, the other party will get un-correct numbers in caller ID. Such exchanges are having 10 to 15 junction lines from parent exchange, and about 100 to 500 sub lines to each customer. The board is having seperate junctions for outgoing and seperate for incomings calls.
As such you will learn in such three types of cases even our good friend has no intention to harass us but the systems are so, that we receive wrong impressions.

Some times marketing people do not answer correctly when we call back them.

The best thing to do is contact your land line operator and report these calls, they can do a trace on future calls.
And hopefully they will stop.

Tell your service provider to block all incoming calls that have withheld numbers.
