You can fix this problem but please do it slowly. First - start feeding her in the morning. Morning feeding gives the dog a chance to run around all day and burn off the calories. Night feeding eventually causes a weight problem in dogs the same as it does in humans. Second, do not give her any "people food". Dog food has certain nutrients in it that are critical to them and are not present in our food. If you have been giving her human food and she refuses ONLY dog food, try adding just a bit of oil from a can of tuna fish. They love it. Each day decrease the amount of that oil until she is eating only dog food without oil. There is also a dog food on the market called Beneful that is primarily vegetable. She might like that. Be patient.

Hi Yahoooooo..!
The causes of obesity generally fall into three categories: overfeeding, genetic predisposition and hormonal disorders.
Finally, the fact that our dogs lead a more confined, sedentary lifestyle contributes to the obesity problem.
Maintaining a healthy body weight requires more careful attention to the amount of food and exercise your dog receives.
1. Avoid feeding table scraps and treats. These are often high in fat and calories which contributes weight gain.
2. If you use treats to train your dog, consider using low calorie dog treats like Charlee Bears and Simon & Huey treats.
3. Reduce the size of your dog’s meals (especially if you train with treats). It is best to measure the amount of food your give your dog at each serving. This helps keep the serving size consistent and prevents the natural tendency to add a little extra to the bowl.
4. Increase the amount of exercise your dog receives. This can simply mean an extra walk or 10 minutes additional playtime. It will do you both good!
5. Consult your vet before beginning any weight reduction program.
6. Keep in mind that most dogs will need to be kept on a weight reducing program for 8 – 10 months to achieve reach goal weight.

First start with a check up at the vet. If all is well just feed her a little less at each meal and exercise her more. Our pets need quality pet food. Read the ingredients list and learn what the stuff on there is and what it does (or does not do) to/for our pets. A quick pet food 101. If the pet food contains corn/corn products or by products it is a poor quality food. Do not pay attention to advertising, they all say there food is great. Corn is a filler that can trigger skin problems. (allergies, skin problems, itching and excessive shedding) By products is anything from an animal not fit for human consumption, including cancerous tissue. Quality foods have meat as the first ingredient. California Natural, Solid Gold, Innova and Merrick are a few of the best brands available. Hi. I have 2 Chihuahuas and I can tell you from experience that if you want your dogs to be healthy and live longer to STOP feeding them table food. That's for humans not dogs. I use Beneful to feed the little guys and that helps with their nutrition. She's accustomed to human food but you have to get her off of it. As far as excercise goes, if she's active like you say, she should be ok. Hope this helps.

Put your dog on a diet. Feed him prescription Science Diet .Your Vet can help you with this. Or just cut back the amount of food you give him. If your dog is like most dogs who will eat anything that is put in front of him or he finds on the floor, it will be difficult, but mostly for you if he is a beggar. Its so hard not to give little scraps from the table when they give their best beggar looks. So you have to be strong! Good Luck!!

Adding green beans or pumpkin to the dogs food is what worked for me and my elkhound. I got the recommendation years ago from a woman that showed her dogs in agility trials.
She also recommended going to a good quality canned food since it has fewer calories than dry or homemade dog meals (which sounds like what you feed her now).

you should feed him dog foods. You can't feed human food everyday, especially like meat. Did you know, they can get heart attack just like human? I know you love him and when he look at you with thoese eyes to give you meat, but If you really love him, you have to feed him dog food.
