It really depends on the type of joke, and if you are talking the police in general or a specific officer or officers that you are friends with.
If you are talkint the police in general, and not someone with whom you have a humorous relationship of some sort already established, my guess would be NO. Don't do it.
Also, if you are talking about a joke that will require the use of police resources, such as an emergency service type response. Ablsolutely not. You can be brought up on criminal charges.
This is one area where it is probably better to tread safe ground and stay clear of trouble. So without further information, I would say NOPE

Police don't have a very good sense of humour in regards to things that waste their time (would you?)
I'm not quite sure what kind of "joke" you could play that wouldn't get you arrested. Public mischief is a charge that is laid when you lead the police to conduct an investigation and the facts about it are made up (fake kidnapping, fake guns).
I have seen people "play fight" when they see us, and think that it is the funniest thing they have ever done. People also like to make donut jokes around us when we go into a coffee shop or point to their buddy and say "take him away!" or yell "I didn't do it!"
They then say we don't have a sense of humour because WE aren't laughing with them. But like anything, you see it 200 times and the "funny" wears thin.

I would say no just on common sense grounds. If the joke involved utilizing the 911 system, you could be charged with Falsely Reporting a Crime and/or Disorderly Conduct. Also, if your joke puts the police officer in a bad situation, you may be biting off more than you can chew.
I would suggest playing jokes on your friends.

I have a friend who decided it would be funny to paint a derogatory term on a parked police car in pink spray paint one night in a secluded neighborhood. He didn't realize that a cop was IN the car at the time, and when the cop came out of the car, all my friend did was laugh. He was nervous and scared. The cop cuffed him and arrested him. Not only that, but he roughed him up a little with a nightstick for being such a punk.
In general, I would say that it is a bad idea to pull pranks on cops. They tend to have very short tempers because they deal with a**holes all day.

You are not allowed to play joke with the police. if you are caught for giving a false distress call, you could be arrested and interrogated and you know what that means. you might just be letting yourselve off your comfort zone.

It depends on what the joke is and how open minded the officer is. Myself, I wouldn't play with fire, it could get you burned.

...you will get arrested because police, generally, are devoid of sense of humour and used to have superiority complex.
