There are beggers only where there are tourists (since most new yorkers know that these guys are professionals and probably own better houses than you do). If you live here, you will not see as many.
Different parts of the city have different feels. If you are on 3rd Ave in the 20's, then there is a ton of irish bars. If you go to Chinatown, there are almost not.
Sex in the City was taped 5+ years ago. Back then they wouldn't let you in most places in jeans. In the last few years things have gotten more relaxed.
There are still "glam" spots in SoHo and Chelsea, but they are probably not what you think they are.

1. Try not to speak with any accent their many gangs don't like tourists.
2. They'll try to get you to smoke, don't.
3. There are more French restaurants in New York than Paris.
4. Manhattan's a dump. Seriously only for reptilians from another planet who dont like to breathe oxygen. (piled with garbage brother, hold to the UK for as long as possible, dont quit your "day house")
5. The statue of Liberty was a gift from the French Free masons = doesn't mean land of the free =means "we Free masons are in charge and running the show"
6. get a stun gun and pile them on and a cane to beat *** with that doesnt look too pimpish.
7. stock up on sweaters (UK ones are made better than any in America mind you)
8. carry a huge flashlight so you can knock somebody in the head.
9. If anyone wants to sell you a cute furry creature in Chinatown named "Mugwai" say your busy and walk calmly to your nearest exit.
9. wear a hard hat - dont wanta get creamed by a suicide jumper.
10. and finally dont drink the bottled there (all ozonated but from toilet) boil well water or catch rainwater and boil it would be safer.
If you can afford get a water coconut carbon purification machine.
11. stop being a party animal straighten up and fly right.
12. NY's a scruffy place outside the fashion shows.
The glam you ask: well a fashion show/ a dog show/ a party upstairs hush hush in some secret room where people are having Rosemary's baby or snipering people.

I would say the first 8 answers wre full of shite (as you say in the UK) No personally I am not a glam type but I lived here and actually know what I'm talking about.
So, the more trendy area for restaurants is "the Meatpacking District" with is from 14th Street to around 11th street or so on the far west side between West street and Ninth Ave.
Also, Tribeca (Triangle below Canal) South of Canal. And Union Square Area between Park Ave. South and Broadway and 14th and 23rd Street. And Soho -- for shops and Restaurants that is around West Broadway between Houston and Canal. The really Rich people live on the Upper east side in the 60's through 80's (the closer to Central Park the Ritzier) very posh area but kind of boring.
As far as clubbing goes I am pretty clueless unless you want misic venues. The most recent "hot area is Chelsea on the West side in the 20's (streets) So of the hip hop type places can be kind of a well dressed but rough (gangsta) type crowd (they check for weapons at the door).
Oh yeah the dividing line betweeen East Side and West Side is Fifth Ave. East ide is in general "less Scruffy" especially above 23rd street as long as you avoid first and second ave. between 23rd and 30th.
You can check out the links below for more info.
PS Manhattan is very safe for a big city as long as you don't do anything stupid like walking around drunk by yourself on side streets after midnight.
PS Mlaw has good advice -- reminds my of almost getting hit by a bus the first time I was in London, I quickly learned why they have "Look right" painted on the corners there. In NYC most streets are "one way". But yeah "look left" at two way streets

New York is a lovely place. Just beware of odd landlords and people who nearly run you over as they walk/run. The majority of New Yorkers are actually very nice and helpful people, contrary to popular belief. I prefer Queens, I must say, because of its cultural diversity. If you are looking for a glamouros place to go , I would suggest Madison Ave in Manhattan. All the tv studios in Manhattan also are glitzy,..Just an idea.

Things are not like sex-in-the-city. unless you make a great deal of $$$$
The Beggers are the ones who tried to spend all there $$$ being glamorous, and they found that the TV had lied to them.

Experience people to be rude. Don't get pissed off by dirty streets and smelly people. Take care of your belongings. Take care of your life!
New York City is a great place when you get used to it.
