Presentment of an expired visa in an Embassy is not a crime but only subject for renewal.

I assume you are a UK citizen in a country other than the UK... why else would you refer to going to a UK embassy. In this case, you will not be charged with a crime nor go to jail. If anything, they will either help you renew your visa or help you get back to the UK.
