Purgatory refers to the condition of purgation after death. Linked to this doctrine of 'the Communion of Saints' is the beilef that the souls in Purgatory can be aided by the prayers, indulgences and good works of living. Though there is no direct reference to Purgatory in scripture, certain texts have been taken by Doctors of the Church as a basis for the doctrine. The reference in 2 Maccabees 12:38-46, which speaks of prayer for those fallen in battle, and the New Testament texts Matthew 5:26; 12:32 and 1 Cor. 3:11-15 are commonly cited in support of the doctrine. Purgatory can be aided by the prayers, indulgences and good works of the living.

Purgatory is a place where souls willingly go to in order to be cleansed and purified, so that they may enter heaven, which is a place where there is perfect happiness, and everhthing is clean, and there is no spot of sin.

The Church teaches that purgatory is just like hell, except that one does not stay there forever.

It is worthwhile to avoid purgatory and jump straight to heaven.

However, as Catholics, we should learn to trust in God, who is Divine Mercy itself, the abyss of Mercy, unfathomable Mercy, incomprehensible to saints and angels.
Through TRUST which is the vessel, many graces are received, so that we may reach heaven faster.
Trust is essential, and Jesus demands it from his creatures.

I think its a made up place for Catholics so that they can feel better about relatives that went to hell. The church also uses it for a way to extort more money from people. It is a truly evil concept. I don't know if it is still taught though. Every man recieves judgement, God is decisive, either heaven or hell.

Nothing unclean can enter Heaven. If you haven't gotten rid of all your imperfections and paid all your debts here on earth, you will go through a process of purification after death. It is laundry time for the soul.

It is sort of a nice/bad place to go if you're not too bad. A bunch of rubbish actually, and certainly not in the bible.
