Energy drinks have come as a substitute to soft drinks. The decline of classical sugar soft drinks such as pepsi and coke is due to the pervasive trend of healthiness and well being. Energy drinks play in the 'all natural ingredients' niche. Also, they are riding on the busy trend - people are so active and so busy and so burned out after their activities that they need energy - what is a better way to get energy than an energy drink.

The biggest market driver for energy drinks right now (especially red bull) is the exploding usage of them as a mixer in alcoholic drinks.

Their target is typically 18-34 year olds who burn the candle at both ends. They typically don't drink coffee and look for that jolt of energy that the drink provides. It also seems healthier than coffee.
