You must be very worried and nothing I can say will make you less so.
Do you live in the UK? I only ask because it's unusual for a hospital to send a child home to await tests if they suspect something serious.
They may well do this with adults but not usually kids.
You could take something positive out of this in that they were unlikley to have sent him away if they thought it was very serious.
However you never know with the NHS these days.
My advice would be take him back if the pain continues or gets worse and insist on some investigation there and then.Trust your instincts.Even if you just go back and tell them how worried you are and ask the Dr what he suspects it might be.
I am a nurse and also mum to a boy who had cancer 7 years ago. He's now well though.
You are welcom to e mail me if you want to "talk" through any worries and I would love to know how you get on.
Good luck. Hopefully it will be nothing serious

Sorry to hear that, but keep a positive attitude, many many times it ends up just being a shadow and nothing at all. Sometimes those places, make u worry so much but not saying too much. Who knows , he could have hurt it a long time ago and its a mark from that, don't think the worse, even though I know its easier said than done. Good luck and just keep telling him no matter what it is, there are so many resources out there nowadays, it will all be ok.. Goodluck

I share your concern - anything that involves our children has a profound effect on parents.
I cannot give a diagnosis - I am not a doctor, however, try to remember that old saying "what is common is common, what ain't, ain't" What I am trying to say is that cancer, which is every ones biggest fear, is not the most likely cause, it is more likely to be something caused by energetic play, or falling in the playground. I know this seems like an easy thing to say, but just keep looking for the best, rather than believing in the worst. Good luck - if you find time keep us informed - people do care.

I am so, so, so sorry. I absolutely hope it turns out to be nothing serious, but I understand your concern. It does sound like it could be a problem. It may help you to know that kids are pretty resilient. I know you must be thinking cancer and kids at that age are much more likely to be able to recover from it. I hope so very much that it's just a bad xray or something minor. My prayers to you and your family.

Oh boy do I know what you are going though. My brother (8) complaining of problems with his leg about two months ago.. we thought it was "growing pains". We took him in and on the xray they noticed that dark shadow as well. Monday taking him back in to see a specialist. Possibilities they told my mother were.. an old break that went unnoticed.. an infection due to the old break.. calcium deposits.. of course the worse nightmare cancer. I pray that everything turns out ok for you and your son. Believe me I do. Please let me know what it turns out to be. Think positive for the sake of you and your son.

I have no idea but the doctors will find out, it may have been lucky that this happened as it has brought a problem to the attention of the doctors. Try to stay upbeat for him and good luck with the diagnosis.

my mum went for xray on lungs, they sent result to GP which said that she had cancer, luckily the GP thought this was wrong and sent her back for another xray. turns out the fools never looked at her medical records to see that she already had chronic bronchiactisis. so it could be just a mistake well i hope so and if it is they'll have hopefully caught it early and will be able to remove it, but try to be positive until you actually receive the results

i'm really really sorry
i hope its not something bad
just be positive ,and hold on to your faith
and keep on telling ur son nice things and do anything to make him forget the pain and anything else
like u can take him somewhere where he can have some fun
tell him stories of little heroes
paint and draw togather
and stay by his side so he would feel better.
