There are some hospitals that allow therapy dog visits. The dogs are usually with an organized group that is certified by one of the main groups, TDI (Therapy dogs International) or Delta Pet Partners. The dog would have taken and passed the test, plus would have fullfilled certain requirements about vaccinations, grooming, etc.

Service dogs are allowed to be in hospitals and therapy dogs. Normally a hospital does not want a dog in the ICU, but they are encouraged in other parts of hospitals. When I was in a nursing home recovering from major back surgery, my service dog was brought in to visit me often. There was an old man that even had a dog living with him in his room at the nursing home. The physical therapists would bring his dog down to my room and he would romp around and sleep in my bed.

Well trained mature dogs with a calm dispositon can be given permission to enter a hosiptal. You need to get you and your dog certified as a "Therapy dog" and then get permission from the hospital administrator. Therapy dog certification can be obtained after about 20-40 hours of professional training, available in most communities thru dog taining schools. Its fun and rather easy to do. Do a Yahoo search for one near you.

Service dogs would be. It's the law. As others have said some hospitals would permit therapy dogs if their policy allows it. Just call ahead and ask.

That has always been a fear of mine, if I were ever hospitalized I would be so depressed to be seperated from my pup.

Here in Germany, dogs are allowed pretty much everywhere so I wouldn't be suprised to see one in a hospital. In the US, I would imagine they would only be allowed if they are therapy or assistance dogs.

Our hospital allowed dogs to visit patients occasionally, and they were encouraged to visit in pediatrics.
We asked that the dogs be freshly groomed before visiting.
I used to take orphaned puppies to work with me, (they stayed in their crate in the nurse's lounge) and I took my big dog to visit in pediatrics..So, unless it is against the rules of that hospital, it isn't illegal..
When I was working in the home health and hospice unit, my dog stayed under my desk..as did the dogs of a couple of other staff members.

We could take a dog in to our hospital, they can be therapeutic for the patient.!!! I'd ask your hospital first if you intend taking the dog in.!!!
We could take him in the ward.!!!
