I had a cheap package holiday in 2002 (my first ever abroad) and have not been able to afford another since. I also haven't taken a holiday in the UK where I live. I would like to hear from others in the same boat so I know I'm not alone.

I go on holiday at least once a year whether I can afford it or not. If I go on a cheap enogh holiday for a week I end up spending about £250 more than I would have spent on a week off work at home.
For example Prague if I get my flights 9 months in advance from Jet 2 or Easy Jet I can get them for about £70 including taxes. The hotel will cost say £15 per night for a mediocre but clean hostel so 6 nights £90. So with £5 a day food budget (cheap cooked meal, a sandwich and 2 cofees), and £5 a day entertainment budget (A museum entry fee, a tour of some kind, or 5 beers) and the whole week comes out at £70.
Add on £70 for additional costs (bus fares, etc) and you end up spending £300 over a week. Even being very frugal while at home you must spend £50 a week on food and things because the cost of living is high so you only spend an extra 250 to go from living on Tesco economy food all week to spending the week living it up in Prague.
If you can get a last minute package holiday that someone cancelled you can get an even better deal. The trick is always keeping in budget and working out a cheap budget you can afford. I managed to spend 5 days in Spain for £350 on a very nice holiday in 2005 and that basically involves putting aside £1 per day for less than a year.
I bet you could go somewhere great if you really thought hard about it and looked for a good cheap flight and hotel.

Not been abroad since honeymoon 95 but we have the cheap 9.50 holidays advertised in the papers instead and have tons of jolly fun! Sometimes there are other things in life that take priority! Although some guaranteed sunshine would not go amiss at the moment!

ditto, I havent been on holiday since my daughter was born 5 years ago - all my time off is spent at my mum's (we live 400 miles apart). Does this count as a holiday? We still go to the beach etc in the summer.

I last went abroad in 1991.

Having first been made redundant (so no money) and then having to contend with deterorating health of my partner, overseas travel has not been an option.

I have NEVER been abroad either on business or holiday.

There is so much to see and do in this country, it beats me why anyone wants to go abroad.

Not me...I take a holiday every year. Going to Jamaica this year.
But, don't worry, there are lots of people in your boat.
Hope you manage it again soon.
