you know that cats are hunters. now some of them are domesticated and do not hunt anymore (our pets). however when they were pure hunters (or still hunters like the big cats, Lions, Tigers, Cheetahs) eating wasn't a guaranteed thing so to preserve energy, they slept for long periods between kills. its in their genes, they still do it.

Because they are cats and not little humans. Cats are mostly little wild animals. They live to survive and that means finding food and staying safe until they can find more food. They conserve energy between meals and they don't have abstract thoughts, like I wonder what my human wants or how about them Red Sox. If let go into the wild they will do pretty much the same thing, find food, rest and find more food. Its what all simple brain stem animals do.

being a cat owner myself it really depends on the age of the cat. For the most part cats are nocturnal, so when you are asleep at night they are doing thier own thing and sleep during the day.
My cats are little hellians during the night they are into everything, sometime i have to keep a squirt bottle at bay to keep them in line. But you gotta love em cause they are so dam cute and are great companions when you feeling a little blue.
So all in all they sleep during the day and play at night. I hope this was helpful for you.

When you consider that a cat ages 7 years every year, just like dogs, they need 7 times more sleep than us humans.

I don't agree with the answer above me...if cats need 7 times more sleep than humans then Humans need 8 hours and 8 times 7 equals...56...so your basically saying that cats are never awake? but yea my answer is that all animals are different in their own way...

They sleep simply because they can. If you didn't have a care in the world and no where to be what would you do? I'd lay around too.
