3 months is the age to start. I recommend using a choke chain collar. When used correctly, the chain hangs loose on the dog. I have trained quite a few Great Danes with this method. You don't actually CHOKE the dog mind you. You merely "flick" the chain attached to the lead or leash to make the "ching" sound. It's the sound that gets the dog's attention. But caution here: you should only use a choke chain on the dog while you are training it and walking it. Take it off at other times. Don't leave it on the dog all the time.

At 3 months old, the dog can have two training sessions a day lasting about 10 to 15 minutes. As the dog gets older, you lengthen your training times. This should be a daily thing at least until your pup knows the drill. The first command to learn should be COME. Then SIT. DOWN. GO.
