I have a Dell Lattitude 620 with 2 GB RAM, Windows XP SP2. I find that it hangs / freezes during use all of a sudden. mouse, keyboard nothing works. I have no choice to boot it again.
I have tried to look at the Event Log Applications, System, etc. Do not find any entry that would help me identify the problem.
Would like to know how best I can go about identifying the problem. Is it some software? Is it hardware issue?
I had done a diagnostic boot some time back and found DST error and replaced the hard-disc. Defragged it too. This too has not solved the problem.
Will appreciate ideas from you.

If it's a hard freeze, as you've described, it's probably hardware related. Start by checking your CPU temperature first. There are programs that will report this in Windows.
Have you made any BIOS changes recently? If so, reverse them!

Depends on what you are doing when it freezes. If you have a program or a number of programs than one or more of them could be using up to much of the system's CPU.
Try doing Control Panel>Free up space on hard drive
This will clear your main drive of things like temp files, cookies empty trash bin.
A virus or spyware could also be causing your problems. Run a virus program and at least two different spyware programs. "Spy bot search and destroy" and "Adaware" are both good ones.
My machine starts to act funny once a couple of spyware programs get on it. as soon as I find and delete them the machine is back to normal.

Your problem is a bit new and unfamiliar. u said that u have 2GB RAM which is too large. consider this fact. also, computers do get hanged due to viruses. do you have updated antivirus on ur computer. if not then update it. check whether all other configurations on ur computer are okay ( i mean hardware ). even if u are not out of prob then consult a nearby technician.

Its sounds like mother board or power problem., Check your SMPS power sector and check it our the Is the fan running?
And look it in BIOS the processor heat how much it has heat when you run the computer.
If any differences ask your manufacturer / dealer to service your mother board or smps or CPU
