Word isn't part of the XP operating system - it's part of MS Office. If you've already purchased/installed Office, and it doesn't appear in the Programs list under "Microsoft Office", the Word application can usually be located by starting Windows Explorer and clicking on:
My Computer
C:/
Program Files
Microsoft Office
Office 11
WinWord (double-click to start)

When you install Window XP it is usually bundle with notepad or wordpad, but If you are talking about full blown word program, then it doesn't comes with it. You have to install Microsoft office, any version would do.
Your question on how to access the generic word or note pad? Very simple, click run, then type in the box either notepad or wordpad and that's it. It should open it and make short cut on your desktop when u feel like it, but for me start run is faster still.
Let me know if it help you.

MS Word comes separately in another software package called MS Office. You need to buy the package to install Word. MS Office also comes with, amongst others, MS Excel for spreadsheet and MS Powerpoint for presentations.
Wordpad and Notepad can be used for wordprocessing, but they're very basic and have less capabilities.

To find out if you have it, click start, click search ,type word*.* in other words,(word star dot star )and search the drive you installed windows on.
When I do this on mine it finds wordpad in C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Accessories
You can use notepad to write basic text files too.

If you kept your programs off of C:\ drive, say either on another hard drive or another partition, Word will still be there, however most users find it easiest to run the Fix from the install disc to get it back to desktop icons and menu links.
If you find you must buy Word there is a free software alternative. It's called OpenOffice.
If you want to Desktop publish, there is another software (free) alternative called Scribus

If you actually have Word installed then it sounds like you installed it under your logonand have not made it available under your wife´s login, XP has this wonderful option that allows you to make programs available only to particular users or all user of the machine. try ubnnstalling Word and re-installing it,looking out for the option that asks if you wish the program to beavailable to all users of the PC.

You've only installed the Operating System (with Works) you need to add MS Office seperately - it's not part of XP.
