Mine (Navy) told me that a "Machinist Mate" did machine shop work, making and repairing stuff.
Well, he was partly right in that Machinist Mates do some repairs, but mostly they operate shipboard power plant systems.
Exactly what I didn't want to do... mostly just wander from turbine to turbine (and other things) and making notes like "Oil flow satisfactory"

I never talked to a recruiter for myself, but went with my son. The recruiter was talking about how much leave military personnel get--every weekend, plus 30 days a year. What he didn't say was that the 30 days are not the 5 days a week, so you are charged for the weekends. He also didn't say that the services can keep a military person on duty 24-hours a day. (Granted that doesn't happen often, but it does happen, especially during a national crisis.)

My son was told he had to enlist for six years to get training as an Apache mechanic. He went for it, got the training, has been in for three years and has never worked on an Apache. He wants out. God, I wish he would have listened to me, or at least told me the lie about the six years. You can tell a recruiter is lying because his lips are moving.

The biggest lie was: "It's just like a regular 9-5 job"
Don't ever, EVER believe that.
