it seems like the ssri's side effects are much more harmful than a tricyclic's.

the new atypicals that you are talking about are a newer class of medications that overall have much less side effects than older tricyclics. The older drugs required a specific diet which for many people was difficult to follow, in addition to numerous interactions with other medications. Depending on what is being treated, some docs still prescribe tricyclics. If you are concerned with a particular medication many sites offer monographs, or speak with your pharmacist or prescribing MD to discuss your concerns.

The tricylics also have side effects, but I agree that the SSRIs have more. For that matter, I cannot even take any of the several SSRIs that were tried on me, but have taken Elavil (a tricylic) on and off for 20 years--it is the only one that has helped me.

Some people, though, claim that certain SSRIs have saved their lives--literally made them new people. It varies from individual to individual.
