Unless there's a medical problem like a constriction in the bowels, there are very simple reasons for constipation that can be corrected easily:

Dehydration: Not enough water intake. Drink 8 glasses of water a day. Sodas coffee don't count - they make the problem worse.

Not enough fiber: The most fiber comes from grains (cereals). Oatmeal, shredded wheat, soy-based are my favorites. The keep your cholesterol low, too. Read the box to see which ones have a lot of fiber. Fruit is great to keep the bowels moving, plus it tastes good and gives you lots of vitamins. Have some fruit every day. Put it in htat cereal. Vegetables help, too.

Not enough exercise: Get up and move around, walk, dance, play a sport.. See how this all adds up to what you're already reading every day about good health. A healthy bowel is a sign of a healthy lifestyle and diet. Chronic Consitpation is a sign or an unhealthy lifestyle.

Oh - Do Not use laxatives. Following this plan above should fix the problem. If it doesnt, you need a Dr., not a laxative.

Her diet is obviously awful.
A check up with her Doctor is a must to make sure there is nothing elce wrong but it's almost always a bad diet to blame.
Advise her to drink lots of water and juices
Eat as many fruits and veggis as she can and get walking and stay away from red meat. Run or walk for an hour a day.
These simple measure will help her a lot.
And she is luck to have a friend that cares to help her
Cheers!

There are several kinds of laxatives, each with its own benefits and risks. IMPORTANT: Particularly since your husband has gotten no relief with a reputable laxative, it is possible that he has an impaction, or even a bowel obstruction. IF HE DOES, and he takes additional laxatives, particularly stimulant laxatives (such as ducolax) he could cause himself severe pain and very possibly a rupture of the small bowel. If this is still a problem for him, he should seek a doctor's advice before taking any more laxatives, or any other kind of laxatives. And stay away from other medications and drugs, and "folk-cures" as well, until a doctor has advised him it is alright to use them. Good luck & let me know how it works out for you!

Typically constipation occurs when people don't get enough fiber in their diets. Sometimes medications can also cause it.

Healthy diet is important: high fiber
Drinking lots of water is important
Finally, EXERCISE is also important to help keep you regular.
This is what your sister should do from now on but for right now, for a really quick fix, I recommend coffee, a healthier but slightly slower relief is a fiber drink like Metamucil.

Lack of fiber and/or dehydrated.

Both are needed to pass waste from the body.
