we own a hotel and have decided to fix lcd televisions in the rooms.but we have heard of cases from other hotels that some customers cut off the wires and steal the lcd tv.as they are sleek they can be packed in their suitcases.can we design an electrical circuit which will warn us when the power cord is cut off.all the tvs will have their power from the control room.any ideas please?

ya.. easy.. just have an extra wire attaching to the tv independant from the other cords...

you will have a 12volt power supply in the control room powering a "normally on" relay .......... one wire will go right to the relay,
the other will go into, and out of, all the tv's in series and then to the relay.. this wire will not be connected to any of the tv's electrically, but will be secured to the inside so it would have to be cut to steal it.

in order to steal the tv the cord will have to be cut, and the curcuit will not be complete and the normally on relay will switch on and complete the curcuit to an alarm of your choice(maybe a 12volt power supply and a light bulb in the control room) .. and your light goes on alerting security.
..

your looking at
2 power supplies .. $50
a normally on relay..$5
lots of wire...............$70-$150
labor to run all the wire etc.

this method wouldnt tell you which room... to do that you would just need a seperate relay, light, and wire for each room.. same concept but just more relays , and the wire would just go out to the room, through the tv, and back.. instead of through all of them. you could make a little box with lights mounted in it labeled with room number.

one bigger power supply could power all the relays..

+$15 bigger power supply
+$50 more wire
+$5 * the number of rooms you have(more relays)

How much money do you want to spend?
The easy way would be to install an anti-theft gate (similar to the ones used in stores) and then put an RFID tag inside the TV. When someone tries to carry it out, it sets off the alarm.

Such systems are comercially available and cost a few thousand dollars.

Physical restraint would be an idea worth investigating. Make it sufficiently difficult that only the most brazen would even bother. Personally, I'd stay with the older, less desirable type of TV.

Sure, you could set up an alarm circuit so when it would be cut it would set off a light and alarm in your control panel behind the desk. It would be simple.
