thongs as in flip flops ...

Driving barefoot is legal in spite of the myths. Flipflops and other footwear that can easily slip off can be more dangerous; it's legal to drive with it too but some driving instructors and cops suggest removing it when driving.
The biggest argument against barefoot driving I've heard is that if somehow a sharp pebble or a piece of glass would become stuck in the pedal & you needed to step hard on the brake, you'd hurt and pull back... however if you're a regular barefooter I don't think you would have a problem with that, not to mention that if you're always barefoot you wouldn't get anything stuck in the pedal in the first place, you'd need a shoe sole to transfer it there.

It's not illegal (in Australia at least), but it's fairly dangerous to drive in thongs. They're more likely to get stuck under the pedals. Whenever I'm driving and I'm wearing thongs that day (I'm only on my L's, going for my P's in a few weeks [don't know why I'm sharing that with anyone I talk to lately] ) I take them off and drive barefoot.

Hope I've helped, otherwise sorry for wasting time.

In California it is not against the law to drive barefoot or in thongs. Although thongs can be dangerous, mine slipped off and got caught under the accelerator.

I know in Kentucky it's illegal to drive without a shirt on (for men obviously) but I wear flip flops all the time and get alot of flack. My copper friend said that it's easier to miss the pedals in those shoes but I don't think there is a law in my state but you may have to check your particular state/country laws.

Sheriam's web link is a good source to start confirming that it's not illegal. I've never had any problems and I drive barefoot all the time. I've never heard of any of the US states having a law against it but you can check with your local law enforcement agency to find out.

I believe that answer would be based on the particular motor vehicle laws of a given state or country

In some states in the US is is llegal. in others it's okay. In some states where it is illegal, that rationale behind the law simply doesn't make sense. Of course the laws are made by professional politicians, and not many people claim that politicians have any common sense....
