I just purchased a new kitten the other day, and while she was fine the 1st day, she has now developed watery eyes! Can anyone tell me what is wrong with her? Is it ok to use saline to wipe along her eyelids?
She is still eating good, but seems to be sleeping a fair bit!
Please help me!

My kitty had the same problem! Your best bet is to wait it out just for a while. My kitty (Monster is her name :P) had watery eyes because she used to live in a barn but was brought to a completely different environment. Your kitty could just have some adjustment issues with the carpet in your house, other animals (if you have them) or even your clothing or bedding. They'll usually get over it within a couple days.

It is also possible that she may just have a cold. If she starts sneezing or getting really lazy - doesn't want to eat or play - then just call your vet. They'll take a look at her and decide if she needs meds for a while! :) Hope I helped you!!!! And good luck with your new kitty!

PLEASE IGNORE THAT OTHER POST!! ENGINE ANTIFREEZE WILL KILL, REPEAT, KILL YOUR CAT IF YOU USE IT IN ANY WAY!!

The best way to clean the cats eyes is to use a soft, warm wet cloth or cotton balls moistened in warm water.

You should take the cat to the vet & have the condition checked. You can also go to the feed store or any large pet store & find some antibiotic ointment without a prescription and try that.

If you decide to use an ointment, this is the best way to apply it: dry the eyes first with a clean cotton ball or cloth, then lightly, gently squeeze the bottom eyelid edges towards the center to form a little cup and put the ointment in that cupped area. It's ok if it overflows but you can clean up any that gets stuck in the fur around the eyes.

If she puts up a big fight and you can't get it done then try this...find someone with a small child & ask for a pair of their old jeans, seriously! Then cut off one leg & slip the cat into the thigh area & push her up til her head is sticking thru the bottom of the pantleg and you can sit on the thigh end so she can't back out and with any luck she can't get her claws out beside her head and scratch you.

Tada!! kitty straight jacket lol!

I have never heard of anything like this before. With a kitten, I wouldn't take any kind of chances--get on the phone and get a vet appointment TODAY--this could be serious. The cold nose part is normal, but the rest of it isn't--unless kitty took a stroll through some type of white powder (bath talc, etc.). Try using a warm washcloth first, and see if the white comes off. If not, and it truly IS the color of the skin--get to your vet. Hope your kitty will be OK.

As you have not had her for very long I would suggest letting her settle in a bit before worrying, there could be a lot of reasons for watery eyes -change in environment. Clean her eyes with warm water ( and dry her face afterwards) If it doesn't clear up in a couple of days pop her into the vets and see what they think.
As for sleeping a lot, she is a kitten and they do that. As long as she is eating and weeing/pooing okay I wouldn't worry.

BTW I love the trouser leg idea - have to remember that one at tablet time - could save me many injuries !

~I hope everyone reports (rmsmiley69), he's going from question to question about cats and telling them to put anti freeze in their food, THIS KILLS THEM!
Other than that answer, I agree with most of the answers. It could be as simple as an allergy. I wouldn't use saline to wipe her eyes, a warm washcloth is best.
Can you call the shelter and ask if your kitten had any such problems before you got her?
Good luck.~

Although this may be any of the problems mentioned previously, if you just got the cat, please take it to the vet. Cats can pass diseases among themselves, and there's no telling what it might have been exposed to before you got it.

It's good practice to always take a newly adopted pet to the vet as soon as possible after you get it. This applies whether you bought it from a stors, or adopted it from a shelter. There are unscrupu;ous breeders who think nothing of selling sick pets, and shelter animals can pick up serious and even potentially fatal diseases in the shelter.

Change can cause a cat/kitten to get stressed and stress can make them sick. So your kitty needs to see a vet and get some meds. I would purchase some Feliway which is a stress reliever for cats and works great. Also try some Rescue Remedy that you can add to the water.
Alot of TLC will really help relieve the stress.

ANTIFREEZE is seriously bad for cats!! NEVER use it for anything. Cats die from ingesting it. Your best bet is to call your vet and ask. It could just be your kitty got cold in her eyes. Just like humans, when you're around alot of cold air sometimes your eyes drain more than usual. Or it could be the start of an infection. Warm packs work really well until you can get into a vet. When my cats eyes drain, I get a wash cloth and soak it in warm water and dab it on his eyes for a few minutes. It's worked for me so it may work for you. However, cats eyes are sensitive and so you want to be careful on how you treat eye problems. That's why it's best to ask a vet. Good luck...

please don't listen to the first answer. it could be as simple as a little cold. keep an eye on her,if she starts sneezing too much, starts wheezing or if this lasts for more than 3 days, call her vet. with the change in climate of going from where you got her to house, it could be a cold. it could also be a respiratory infection caught from others where you got her. good luck and i hope that your new baby feels better soon. sounds like she found a good loving and caring owner
