Yes, SP2 works for ALL versions of XP and it's FREE.
System Requirements
* Supported Operating Systems: TabletPC; Windows XP; Windows XP Home Edition ; Windows XP Media Center Edition; Windows XP Professional Edition (There isn't different versions of SP2...just one XP SP2 that installs for all of the above.)
There's 2 ways of getting SP2.
1. Use Microsoft Update to get SP2. (Via Internet Explorer, Tools, Windows Update.)

2. Download SP2 from MS download Center. (Don't worry about it saying it's only for IT Pros...you can use in on your home computer too)

XP service packs are generally for individual editions; that is an XP pro pack should not work on XP home.

If you know you have the right service pack however then just double click on it to run the pack. It will go through it's normal paces and ask you to make backups and what not (you should but there is a low risk). From there it will check you against the Microsoft database to see if your product key is pirated, if it is a pirate version [bad you, smite!] you can not install SP2.

The program will give you instructions as you go along.

You can download Service Pack 2 from the Windows Update site. You will find a link to Windows Update at the top of START MENU -> Programs.
The download will be about 450MB. I think that you have the option of downloading a full package that you can burn to CD. This is handy if you have more than 1 PC to update.

Once you have downloaded and installed SP2, you should use Microsoft Update (an updated version of Windows update) to download even more updates for Windows and other Microsoft software on your PC.

If you receive a copy on CD, say from a PC magazine, you would go to a normal install procedure. Once SP2 is in place, run Microsoft Update to get up to date.

Yes. A "Service Pack" just provides you with all of the updates since your current version/service pack. Such as security patches, Internet Explorer upgrades, Windows Media Player upgrades, misc. Windows bug fixes, etc. So yes.

[EDIT]
You don't have to buy it. Go to Windows Update, but I'd only suggest it if you have a high-speed internet connection.
