It very much depends on the breed, the number of puppies and how well the dam is coping. Smaller breeds tend to be rehomed later than larger breeds. If puppies are from a very large litter, it benefis them to leave earlier to gain socialisation & individual attention with humans which is not possible, even with the best breeder with 8 or 10 puppies to look after. Weaning can begin as early as 3 weeks if they are ready and willing, but may not be complete until 8 weeks, depending on the dam's willingness to keep on feeding the pups.

Rehoming Puppies

Puppies start weaning at 3 weeks and are off their mother by 5 weeks 9any longer is unnecessary and unpleasant for the mother).
They are ready to leave the mother and litter when they are 7 weeks. Puppies should go to their new homes by 9 weeks at the latest to ensure that they settle in as quickly as possible. Some very small breeds are excluded from this because they are so delicate and don't get rehomed until abour 12 weeks. Equally, some breeders of large confident breeds rehome their puppies at 6 weeks.
In an ideal world a puppy goes to its new home at 7 weeks having had its first course of injections, wormed and defleaed!

puppies should be weaned at no later than 6 weeks of age.
Some dams start weaning their pups as early as 4 weeks of age.
Most people and breeders say around 8 weeks s is a good time to rehome a pup, but depending on cicumstance ( eating well, has first shots, etc) I have let pups go at 6 to 7 weeks.
Never earlier though !!

Honey, your vet is wrong. The puppy would barely have had it's eyes open, if they were opened at all at two weeks. (14 days old is on AVERAGE when they open. Many small puppies eyes do not open until 2 1/2 weeks old.) Second, a 2 week old puppy would not be able to maintain its body temperature or have enough teeth to eat solid food. Personally, I would call the breeder and get a copy of the shot records from it's first office visit and take them into a DIFFERENT vet. Also, continue to feed him what you were prior to going to the vet, since he was doing just fine. Good luck.

Anyone who says 6 weeks is absolutely NOT correct. No earlier than 8-10 weeks. It is ILLEGAL in many states to buy, sell, or give away a pup less than 8 weeks old. That is why shelters only adopt out puppies 8 weeks old and up. Taking them from their litter and mom too early can cause a myriad of behavior problems.

You should start weaning at around 4 weeks old, they can eat solid food by then. Dont do it cold turkey. the mom needs to dry up slowly.
rehomed at 8 weeks old. Depending on the breed it will be longer.

In most states it is illegal to sell puppies under 8 weeks. It is also important for the puppies to have social time with the other puppies, even if they are eating solid foods just fine, otherwise they may have trouble adjusting to the move. I like to leave the puppies together until they are 10-12 weeks old.

You start weaning at 3-4 weeks, they should not be re-homed until after 8 weeks.
