I dont smoke. I was just wondering what would it take a person who smokes right now to stop smoking? I really hate it when people smoke and smoking is really bad for you and I was wondering... what would it take for a smoker to stop smoking?

After smoking for 25 years. I came down with a bad cold. And as I was lighting up a smoke, a four year old child said to me "You can't really be enjoying that."

It struck me hard that this child had more sense than I did. I quit.

That was 30 some odd years ago.

Very good for you...you do not smoke. That's a plus for anyone. However, every single person in this country has RIGHTS by the Constitution and until they have an Amendment which outlaws smoking, (and I don't believe they every will unless they want a multi-billion dollar industry to collapse) they get to smoke whether people who do not, like ir or not.

What it would take is 'free government patches and gum'...

Hey, look at it this way. They give new people coming into this country tax free living for 7 years; a line of credit through Bank of America; people get to come over the border and work and not pay taxes, but collect social security...SO THEY CAN AFFORD to help people quit smoking if the surgeon general thinks it's so bad.

There a many things that people do that I hate as well because they are against my beliefs; however, I have to accept it because government says it okay. So, we all have to just 'live with it' as it is for now until changes are made.

Besides...smokers don't kill as many people as drunk drivers or people UTI of drugs operating cars. I think alcohol should be banned because I don't drink and I HATE it when people do. They don't know how badly THEY smell, how they talk, barely walk or drive. So, which is worse? I'm in my own home smoking, it's been banned in public places like bars and restraunts..on planes and airports...and I guess that does it for now.

I don't smoke either..
But I do know this, it's easier to give up alcohol for an alcoholic than a smoker to stop smoking.

There was money involved, and the drinker is a non-drinker now for 4 years, and the smoker friend is still puffing away, all alone behind my garage, out of my sight and nose rador!!

it makes me throw up.
I live in California......and it's almost a non-smoking state!!

They will only stop if and when they truly want to, or even when their health depends upon it........it's a hard habit to kick!!

Glad it's not my addiction.

I did smoke socially as a teen.

I was a smoker for about 3 yrs - when I was 16 to 19.... basically for me it was the realization that I stunk....all of my clothes - even my hair - nasty. And the fact that cigs are so expensive was a biggie too.

I nkow its a lot harder for people who smoked for longer though. My Mom smoked for over 30 years and she quit about 5 yrs or so ago after she was hospitalized for severe bronchitis and had to be on oxygen. Oxygen tank and a lighter don't mix well :), so my Dad quit as well. Afterwards they realized how bad our house stunk my whole life and they've never gone back.

I smoked 2 + packs per day for over 30 years. I had a "scare" hit me. One day I couldn't catch my breath and just felt that I had a heart attack. I didn't, but I quit "Cold Turkey" the next day. Its been 5 years now and feel great. Believe me, it's a very hard "addiction" to break. I enjoyed smoking very much. I am thankful that this "Scare" happened to me or I probably would still be smoking.

I don't smoke, and I hate secondhand smoke!

Frankly, it seems like nothing can stop them! I think they will stop until their body really damaged by smoking...

Just for your information, my uncle stopped smoking until his leg swollen almost double the size... doctor said his veins was clotted.. and might related to smoking.... he stopped finally....

Personally, when I saw the ugly teeth, "tar lungs"... etc, I want to vomit....

My dad caught a cold and it was pretty bad. He had to quit smoking. He got over his cold and he still hasn't smoked. I think I'll bake him something as a celebration (three weeks!).

Perhaps you should emphasize the high maintenance cost of being a smoker.
