To have complete color harmony in any room, you need 3 colors. One dominant color, one medium color and one accent color. The dominant color is obviously the paint color. The medium is the trim, molding, etc and the accent color would be any decorative objects such as carpet, curtains, etc.
Black and white are not considered colors, as white is the absence of all color and black is the mix of all colors. That is why black and white go with everything. Using black and white is not a good idea, as you may find the room to be stark, cold and harsh. That being said, all rooms should have a touch of black to ground all the colors together. You have this with your black wood tables and desks.
The complementary color of red is green. But you don't want your room to have a xmasy feel to it so if you do choose to use green, use a green from the olive green family.
The best way to choose your other color is to choose an object in the room that you really like, such as a vase, a painting, a sculpture, etc. Choose a color in that that you like and bring all the colors together.
If you aren't certain what color to choose, you could always go with a neutral color, such as taupe beige or taupe grey. Also, go to www.sico.com and use their virtual decorator (it's free!) to see what the room would look like BEFORE you buy your paint.
Keep in mind that color greatly affects how we feel. Red is a very aggressive color and will not help you sleep well so make certain you tone it down a notch with a softer color (such as the olive green or any other neutral soft color).
Red is also a warm color. If your room is facing south, you may just find that the room is too warm in the summer months...
Whatever you decide to do, enjoy yourself. Oh... and instead of using 2 different reds on the walls, you may want to consider this... it could get really busy and you may get sick of it easier. What you can do though to get the effect of 2 different colors without it being too busy is to paint the walls the same color and then, with masking or painters tape (I like to use more than one width of tape), make vertical lines on the walls. In between the lines, use a clear semi-gloss or satin finish varnish (you can get this in latex too) and with a paint roller, paint the varnish where there is no tape. Remove the tape as soon as you've finished and let it all dry. The effect you'll have is striped monochromatic walls, but it'll be all the same color, just with a different finish. It looks really classy and is quite easy to do.
So... get to it. And have fun!

If you have good enough light that it wouldn't make the room too dark, chocolate brown accents look nice with some reds. You might do better with a soft yellow instead of having everything too dark. You'll have to be sure to pick a shade of red you really like if you're going to use that much of it.

Red, tan and black would look awesome. It would have a very warm feel, but the tan would help to mellow all the crazy reds in the room. I'd like this best.
I also like red and purple. That would be another warm combination.
To cool it down you could add green (I'd choose a sage green so it didn't look like a Christmas tree).
Or you could go for really spicy and use orange.

How about red and gold. I had part of my living room walls painted with deep orange and the furniture in bright red. The curtains were red and gold strips!!!
