I do not like to join groups. I don't like to tell my problems to strangers. But I have been told I should go to Al-Anon and it may help. Anyone have positive/negative experience with Al-Anon?

I attended al-anon for quite a while. I am not a "group" person either. I have a hard time letting people get too close. You can go and take what information you need and leave the rest. No one ever tried to push anything on me. I never even talked in the meetings. I just listened and a lot of what I heard helped me feel a lot better. I felt stronger inside and it helped me not to react as much to the addict I was living with. I never worked all the steps the way they said to, but I did take a lot of the suggestions I heard and applied them in my life. Unfortunately, there is not much we can do for the addict. I'm sure you've probably heard - they have to want to recover. The good news is that you don't have to go nutz right along with them. You can learn how to have some peace of mind for yourself in the midst of the storm. There's no way it's gonna hurt anything, and it just might help you. Good luck!

I attend the meetings and really what they do for me is realize that the person I am dealing with has a sickness and what they do is not our fault, we should not enable them, remind us that we can not make that person change unless they want to, and to help us focus on ourselves and to give our problems to a higher power.
They are nice people and you may find someone to talk to and to get any frustrations you have out and learn how to deal. I felt the same way you do and it helps me so that I can get my head straight. It may not be perfect but it can help.

It's not for everybody, but it doesn't hurt to try.
You might like it, you might not.

Personal experiences...
In my case, I drank daily for 14 years...
I went to AA sometimes during, it just didn't do much for me.
I've been sober for 6 or 7 years now, I never went this time around, it's not for me, but I'm sober.

But my roommate, similar situation, many years sober, he goes to AA every single day (well, almost). I have no problems with that, it works for him.
