I think that there may be a bit more to this.

We need nine amino acids in order to make all the proteins we need to grow. They can be found just about everywhere except in sugar.

Grains and beans (or lentils) will provide all the essential amino acids that we need. Not all the vitamins and minerals--for that we need fruits and vegetables--but all the amino acids. Add to that milk, eggs, and meat, and not all that much of it, either, and we will have all the amino acids we need to grow.

No one food will have all the amino acids we need. Mix grains and beans together, add just about anything else, and we will get them.
