your orthodontist probably told you to leave your retainer in while you eat so you don't lose it. if you have had your braces off for at least two weeks, then taking it out when you eat is fine. bring your case with you to school, and when you are ready to eat lunch, take your retainer out, put it in the case, and put that in your backpack. i see kids at the orthodonist office i work at almost everyday that threw their retainer away because they left it on their lunch tray. don't ever do that! try to not ever have it out for more than 15-20 minutes at a time. if you take it out, make sure you remember to put it back in. just head to the bathroom sink and rinse your mouth with water or mouthwash before putting it back in. you can rinse the retainer too. if it feels just a little tight when you put it back, thats okay, but a lot tight means you had it out too long. it may be uncomfortable for a little while, but if you leave it the tightness will go away. in a month or so you will be so used to your retainer it will feel weird to NOT have it in. if you do take my advice, please be VERY careful not to lose it. retainers are very expensive for your parents to replace, and not wearing one will undo all the hard work you went through with your braces. wearing your retainer as much as possible is so important. any more questions please email me anytime.

When you are at school, try to rinse your retainer in clean warm water before you put it away, and also before you re-insert it in your mouth. Even if you don't have time to brush it, at least you will be rinsing off some of the bacteria.

At home, there is a very good product that kills germs on your retainer and will probably help it to stay cleaner than just brushing with toothpaste. That product is SonicBrite. You can get it at www.dentakit.com and other places on the web.

Another great product is Retainer Brite, in tablet form.

Both of these products will help keep your retainer clean and fresh smelling.

I have been wearing retainers at night since I got my braces off a few years ago. Using these products, I have never had a problem with odor, even when I was wearing the retainers 24/7 in the months right after my braces came off.

I hope this helps.

I had braces, too. You can take a travel size mouthwash in your book bag or purse. Go to the bathroom and while you are using it, use the mouthwash and if you are too embarrassed to use it out in the sink, use it in the stall. I am sure that will help your bad breath, make sure you brush the retainer and your teeth in the morning, and you may want to brush your teeth, tongue and cheeks as they hold bacteria, too. I was told to always wear the retainer or the teeth could move, so I would recommend you do that too.

everlasting retainers will save your tooth straighter and don't choose as lots maintenance to maintain up with the artwork your dentist did (via fact which you tooth will prefer to go returned continuously). additionally, you will on no account could hassle approximately dropping your retainer or having a canine/baby chewing on them. night retainers can harm your tooth in case you haven't any longer worn them in a on a similar time as so which you're able to take them out interior the night with out understanding it. yet with everlasting retainers you will continually could use floss threaders making it tougher to floss, and because maximum human beings do no longer floss adequate, something making flossing tougher for a occasional flosser isn't solid. everlasting retainers is additionally painful in the event that they wreck and you will could wait till you're able to be seen to get your orthodontist to restoration a poking cord or whatnot. I choose i might have had a time-honored retainer as a replace of the clean one via fact it stretches out with the aid of the years so i'm continually having to flow returned in and that they wreck (no longer actual yet extra advantageous than on no account it rather is stressful) additionally, my canine flow a carry of my retainer one night I pulled it out and that i could no longer get returned to the orthodontist for some weeks so my tooth began shifting.
