I believe it originated in Greek Theatre when, during the course of a play, the hero became entangled in something it seemed there was no way out of when suddenly (quite literally) a platform descended from above the stage from "Mount Olympus" and rescued said hero.
Another way to say it would be "Here comes the Cavalry!"
