I live in a fairly humid area and I am finding it impossible to keep the smell of kitty cats from wafting through my flat. I have two cats and two large litter boxes that are sifted every day and cleaned completely every week. I have tried a variety of litter types but nothing seems to stop the stink. I don't like the perfumed litter but I am interested in hearing what other people use.

I have also tried a variety of different foods on my boys but nothing seems to change the smell. Any ideas would be great because it's getting annoying.

try putting baking soda in the bottom of your litter box and even sprinkle some in the litter itself. another great idea to absorb odors is to put little containers of vinegar around your flat. the vinegar is great for absorbing all kinds of odors.

The only advice I can give is to get clumping litter, that absorbs the ammonia from cat urine and alot of the cat litters nowadays have baking soda in them. If not, you can add some and that helps alot. You also have to clean the boxes daily, especially with two cats.

I assume you're from England, seeing that you used the word, "Flat". I'm not sure what kind of products you can get there.

I have cat litter called, "Tidy Cats", and it's a clumping formula for muliple cats, and it works fine. I change it out every two weeks, but clean it out daily. I also have a device called a "litter locker". You scoop the cat poo out, and it goes into this device that has an internal plastic bag. You drop in the poo, close the lid, turn the wheel, and the poo is gone. About every two weeks, you open the unit up, pull the "sausage" like bag out, and dispose of the waste. No mess, no smell. It's great.

Best wishes.

You should be cleaning the litter box out (ie. scooping) at least twice a day - perhaps more if you have 2 cats. Try the arm and hammer litter - and deodorizer to sprinkle in clean litter. Are you sure that your cats are actually going inside the litterbox? If this doesn't work, perhaps there is a medical reason for the stink. Speak with your veterinarian. Good luck!

Definitely use clumping litter, and add some baking soda to it, and mix well. We have 2 litterboxes for one cat and our place never smells like a litterbox. I am very sensitive to smells too, I am the first to detect an icky odor. The brand I use is CatIt Super Mix. Premium litter. We haven't completely emptied the boxes in a couple months either.

Try Fresh Step Clumping litter - absorbs litter smells really well I found. When I use the ordinary non-clump clay litters, I find that spraying the litter box with "Nature's Miracle" from time to time also keeps the litter box smells to a minimum.

i will bet all you have to is change their diet.

i went through the same thing, and first, the vet checked a stool sample from my cat and she had a parasite. so she was treated for that for a week, but the smell was still awful. so i took her back and the vet told me she had irritable bowl syndrome (the same thing people can get). she was 4 months old at the time so i had a hard time believing this. the vet put her on a "special vet-reccommended" diet, an antibiotic, and a steroid. this stuff helped for the first day or two, but after that it was right back to the stink. lol

finally i followed my instinct and weaned her off of all the medicines the vet had given her, and started feeding her a canned cat food called "wellness." well, within two days, her litter didn't stink at all, her coat was soft and shiny, and she was healthy and active. sorry if this is gross, but her poops are very hard, tiny, and almost oderless because she is digesting all of the nutrients in the catfood so there is not much waste.

almost all other catfoods, canned and dry, contain only meat by-products (intestines and other gross things you wouldn't eat) and LOTS of carbohydrates that cats, as carnivores, don't need. therefore, cats on this diet produce lots of waste because they don't digest the carbohydrates, because they aren't meant to eat them in the first place.

wellness makes their catfood with only usda approved, human-grade meat and no animal by-product fillers. plus, meat is their #1 and main ingredient. so if you're interested, try "wellness" wet cat food, and only get the kind marked "grain-free" on the can (that's the kind without rice or wheat in it, which is also used as filler).

sorry this is so long, but i went through lots of worry, time, and hundreds of dollars trying to find out what was wrong with my cat. and in the end i felt like our vet was either as ignorant as me, or took advantage of my ignorance in cat nutrition, so i had to do lots of research on my own. i don't want anyone else to have to go through that.

good luck! =)

Have you tried using the kind of litter that clumps? With that, you can remove not only the poop, but also the pee. Therefore, the litter box doesn't smell so strong. Also, I think the urine of male cats smells stronger than that of females. We use the clumping letter and have no problems with odors. Hope this works for you.

Well, I usually put a bit of baking soda in the litter(even though some already come with it) and I find that helps a lot, or try to keep the area the litter boxes are in a bit drier...maybe using a small fan.
Hope I helped. =]

I like the Tidy Cat clumping litter, the one with the blue cap. It doesn't have a strong scent but it does keep the odor down.

Also an automated box like the littermaid with the above clumping litter works really well.
