I'm sixteen years old (17 this June), don't have any medical problems that I know of, I'm not on any medication, and I'm not under a lot of stress or anything like that.

I'm not sure how long ago, but I noticed that a lot of my hair ends up in the shower drain. Like, a lot. I used to dye my hair a lot, so I stopped to see if it would help. I have roots longer then an inch now, and I'm still loosing a lot of hair. I checked out the back of my head in a mirror, and in some places if my hair shifts there'll be small patches of hairless skin. I've considered that it could be genetic. My mother's hair is thinning, but she's also going through menopause. Her own mother still has a full head of hair.

Does anyone know what could be causing this? Short of going to a doctor (if this persists, I will go to one), are there any accommodating signs that warm of a sickness that I could look for?

thebillthatknows - My microwave? I have no idea. Probably older then I am. We've had it forever.

I have four siblings living with me, though. None of them are experiencing this. If it were radiation or something, wouldn't they show signs also?

I have five brothers and sisters. If this were genetic, wouldn't it stand to reason that they'd be showing signs too? They've all got really nice thick hair, and I used to too.

I only wash my hair about twice a week, and I change shampoos and conditioners all the time. I just buy what ever's on sale, that I've used in the past and liked. I hardly ever style my hair, and rarely do I tie it up or anything.

Looking back now, I can remember waking up in the middle of the night for a short time a couple days ago. I was covered in sweat. I thought I was just too hot, so I kicked my blankets aside and went back to sleep. I've also been experiencing slight vaginal pain every now and then, and I'm not sexually active. On top of this I've been really tired lately. And the more I think about it, the more it sounds like menopause, which is weird.

See a dermatologist.

I've heard of losing hair in patches only when someone got pranked and had Nair or some other hair removal formula put into their shampoo.

It is normal to lose some hair, but it is not normal to have bare patches of skin on your scalp at your age. So yes, please see a doctor ASAP, and I'm sure there will be an explanation.

Sorry but this kind of problem can only be diagnosed by a doctor. There are a lot of potential causes. Everyone loses many hairs every day but if you actually have bald patches I would run not walk to the doctor to make sure you don't have a serious condition.

There a many medical reasons for hair loss. If you are experiencing this some of the reasons for it are Alopecia, Some hormone imbalances like Hypothyroidism. Most of the conditions are very treatable. It sounds like its time to go see your Doctor before it gets any worse. Have some tests done. I doubt your are in early Menopause. VERY rare in someone your age.

try changing to another brand of shampoo. the one you're using may be too harsh on you. no need to shampoo everyday. you may alternate with usage of conditioner on every other day that you're using shampoo.

try a milder shampoo. see it that helps. but loosing hair is normal. we loose around 50 to a hundred of them per day. that's the average. no need to worry. you won't get bald... :)

ASK YOUR DOCTOR, IT COULD BE VITAMIN B OR OTHER ISSUES AND POSSIBLE THE HAIR WILL TAKE LONGER TO GROW BACK. USE A DIFFERENT SHAMPOO. AND DON'T PUT YOUR HAIR IN A PONY TAIL.
