My male and female cat sleeps in the spare room at night, they are fine with it, they have there food and kitty litter in there..we dont let them wonder around the house at night because they knock things over and annoy the hell out of us..

They are all happy and that, but usually once or twice each night, the male cat will start screaming and meowing so loudly and eeriely, i have never heard him do this, or any other cats make this sound in my life.

we recently moved here, and im not sure why he is doing it.

could something be scaring him or could someone be coming into our yard?

We had a male cat who would go down in the basement at night and scream like a werewolf. I had to warn house sitters so they wouldn't be frightened out of their wits. One possibility I learned about after he died at about the age of 18: for some older cats this is a sign of onsetting dementia. When I thought back about it, I realized that he did this only the last two or three years of his life.

If he is an older cat, be on the lookout for other signs that he is aging: inability to leap to places he used to like to get to, trouble with urination, not grooming himself as often or as well, etc. I wish I could tell you where I read this, but a good reference book on cats should help. You should also mention it the next time you visit the vet.

By the way, with reference to at least one answer above, you probably know that as far as mating goes, males cats only respond to females in heat. They don't just get the urge to go pick up chicks like humans do.

If he is not fixed he smells another female in heat , and yes they can smell it up to 3 miles away. You could try some toys w/catnip or a way so he can look out the window. He is probably just bored. This may sound silly but your not dreaming this are you? Good Luck

You didn't say if he was neutered or not, but that screaming sound (almost like a baby crying) is usually a mating cry. He may see another cat in the backyard and calling to it. Try pulling down the shades so he can't see out. Out of sight. out of mind.

Is he crying when he uses the litterbox? That could be a sign of a urinary tract infection. He may just need time to adjust too, cats are very much creatures of habit. A move is very upsetting to them.

You should IMMEDIATELY take his tempature!! If it is below 101 take him to the vet. ASAP

Cats {mostly males} get a grainy type plug inside the urethra and they can't urinate.

If this is his condition please know that this can kill a cat in 24-48 hours! Besides the drop in temp their breath might smell like urine.

If his temp is above 102.4 then he still needs to go to the vet cuz something is definately wrong.

I remember when we moved into our new place our cat cried his little tail off! I read somewhere that when a cat is in unfamiliar surroundings they tend to panic at times.

your cat is screaming in the middle of the night because you shut him in 1 room. he must!!! have exercise & stimulation. you are inflicting a terriblwe act of wanton cruelty against your cats. if you can't handle the rough side of keeping cats as well as the pleasnt side, you should get them rehomed where they will be loved & well treated as they should be for what they are. be ashamed of yourself, in my view, all animal abusers should be rounded up & gassed.
