You are comparing apples and oranges. The .30-06 Springfield is a good hunting round for any North American big game. The .458 Lott (an improvement by lengthening the old .458 Winchester Magnum) is a dangerous game round suitable for elephant, the largest land game in the world. For comparison:
.30-06 165 grain Hornady Light-Magnum: Speed at a hundred yards about 2,802 FPS; energy: 2876 FPS.
.458 Lott 500 grain Hornady soft-point:
Speed at a hundred yards about 2,028 FPS; energy: 4,535 FPS.
Translation: The .30-06 is quicker, but the .458 is heavier, wider and wields more than two tons of striking energy at a hundred yards. The .458 beats the '06 by a ton of energy. Speed is neglible since speed kills, at 2,000 feet per second or 2,800 feet per second.
Hope that helped.

The .458 Lott is a belted-magnum rifle cartridge used for hunting large, dangerous African game, like cape buffalo. It throws a 500 grain bullet at 2300 ft/sec for a kinetic energy of 6020 ft-lbs at the muzzle. The .30-06 Springfield is a rifle cartridge best suited to deer and elk-sized game. The more powerful .30-06 loads throw a 180 grain bullet at 2700 ft/sec for 2913 ft-lbs of kinetic energy at the muzzle.
Seriously, it's no contest. At all.

well what do you want to do...the 3006 will shoot farther and faster...the 458 is way more gun and more suited for larger game...but check this out you can kill everthing on the north american continent with a 270 savage...with good bullets like barnes x...you get a flat shooting gun that is leathal out to 800 plus yards if you can shoot well...ive taken everything from brown bears to moose deer and elk with my savage and only ever shot any animal once...
