There are a lot of factors you should consider. Is the hair dye the only other chemical your using? How often do you get your hair cut? Are these root touch ups we are talking about or is this all over color? Is the dye darker than your natural color? A lot of other chemicals out there usually result in taking away layers of each individual hair strand. Ex; perms, relaxers, previous hair coloring processes, etc. So if you are leaving your color in for an hour on top of other processes, that's not recommended. You should be getting your hair cut every 4-6 weeks, reason being, the color does damage your hair whether you notice it or not. Once that hair starts splitting, which is usually the first step in the damaging of hair, the sooner you catch it the less you have to cut. To answer my next question. All over color, or touch ups? Root touch ups are the way to go. I do understand however, after a while that color fades and it needs to be refreshed. In this case, do the root touch up as normal, after your instructed time is up, grab some color-safe shampoo, apply to hair with color on and use this to spread the color to the ends of hair strand. Spread evenly, use water if necessary, and let sit for 5-10 minutes. Remember this: store bought colors most likely stop processing when air dries the color. Darker colors are less damaging to the hair than lighter colors.

no.

first off, you're using a box colour which is absolutely terrible for your hair to begin with. these "dyes" are metallic compounds which just wreck havock on your hair!

i recommend leaving colour up to the professionals, but, if you insist on doing it at home, at least go to sally beauty supply and get the colour and a bottle of 20 volume developer. mix the products 1:1, or 2 oz of both. apply as quickly as possible to the regrowth only, leaving at least 1/3 of the mixture. in about 15 minutes, you want to apply the leftover colour all around. leave that on for 10-15 minutes, and then rinse!

the purpose of the developer is to raise the cuticle, which is the outer layer of the hair. the higher the volume (10,20,30,40) the quicker the cuticle is raised. because you probably are slow to apply, you're better off with a 20 volume developer.

when you leave the colour on for more than the time you're supposed to, you're just leaving the cuticle wide open for no reason! this leads to serious breakage. it's incredibly damaging to your hair, not to mention leaving it on that long does nothing to help the colour "stay" or "stick" any better - it can make it actually rinse out / fade quicker!

the act of shampooing the colour out and following up with a good conditioner helps "re-seal" the cuticle.

you should invest in a quality shampoo and conditioner if you plan to colour your hair. this will ensure your colour lasts.

pureology makes a fantastic line of products for colour-treated hair. they're sulfate free - salt strips your hair of moisture and colour, and it's a common "filler" ingredient in most shampoos!

another (cheaper) line is the sexy hair concepts soy protein shampoos and conditioners. they come in yummy flavours like pumpkin and chocolate!

good luck.

Well when i highlighted my hair blonde from brown, the box said i could leave it in for 1.5 hours to get the blondest results, so i did. My hair never felt or looked better.

I don't find this ridiculous at all. My cat is also my best friend. I understand that you are hurt and maybe even angry. I was told that my dad died(this was a few years ago) right before my finals. Even though I was still in a state of shock I went ahead and took my finals and did the best that I could. I think you should do the best you can on all your o-levels. Do it for yourself and for your best friend, Tiddles. You have something that most pet owners never have. You have her little kittens and you can love them and take care of them and maybe, just maybe one of them will turn out to be like their mother and you will have a best friend again. Good luck and I wish you the best. Take good care of the kittens and look out for them. They need your love as much as you now need theirs.

NEVER! Peroxide has ammonia-which damages the hair and scalp alot even when left for the regular 20-30 minutes!-(depends on what brand of haircolor or if its permanent or semi permanent color)

No, it is not OK. the dye can damage your hair. It can make your hair to become porous and the next time you color your hair or perm your hair, your hair won't take the color nor perm. Always follow instruction.
