I know this probably sounds REALLY dumb but what does like 20k and stuff mean?

The "k" stands for thousand, so $1000 = 1k, so in your original question 20k is $20,000.

K means 1000... for instance, if you said 20K...that would mean 20,000.

Kilometer, Kilogram. K means thousand (except for computers, where it means 1024).
