Stop comparing China and India

Opinion: In reality, China and India share very little in common, so why do people keep comparing them?
The topic of China versus India in the worldwide software smackdown comes up all the time. I understand why people make these comparisons: they make great headlines, readers in both nations and their supporters will get all hot and bothered, and like any other set of statistics, they can be skewed to show that China, India, or Lithuania is the greatest country on the planet, depending how the author massages the numbers.
This argument has become particularly popular as both countries suck up greater amounts of U.S. software and other technical outsourcing work. It's also fun for people who know very little else about either country to look at the map and say, "Wow, China and India. They're both big countries. They both have huge populations.

In reality, the two nations share very little. Both are home to way too many people. Both are Asian. And ... yeah, that's about it. Their people don't look alike; they don't eat the same food; they certainly don't speak the same language(s); and except for a significant Muslim population in both nations, they don't share a common religion.

To bring the contrast into more stark relief, start putting other numbers side by side. China's infrastructure smokes that of India, in roads, in telecommunications, you name it. China measures its mobile phone subscribers in the hundreds of millions, compared to India's 40 million or so. Pro-India pundits point to the huge growth in that country's mobile sector. Yes: when you h**e one subscriber, and you add another one, you've doubled your subscriber base. When zero is the baseline, there's nowhere to go but up. While China was spending billions building out its fixed line and mobile infrastructure in the 1990s, India, well, wasn't.

The same is true with Internet users. China now has the world's second largest Internet market, and some people actually managed to make some nice cash from investing in the nation's Internet plays. In some places in China, namely large cities like Beijing and Shanghai, it's easier to h**e broadband installed than in many parts of the United States. Don't believe it? Try it and see. India? Broadband? Try getting online via dial-up for starters. Again, relative to population, India, for a country that makes such a big deal out of its software industry, has extremely poor connectivity.

China has demonstrated again and again that when it focuses its resources, especially financial resources, there isn't much that can stand in its way. It spent a decade to create a world-class telecoms infrastructure, and now it has one. If it wants a world-class software industry, guess what? It'll h**e one. There are plenty of eager returnees who are looking to make a bundle, and they'll be ready to do it. That's exactly how India did it, and outsourcing to India has now become more expensive than sending the same work to China.

Let's throw in some other metrics just for fun. China won 63 medals at the 2004 Olympics, 32 of them gold. India won a single silver medal. Beijing will host the 2008 Olympics. No Indian city has yet made a serious bid for the Games. China is on its way to becoming one of the world's most popular tourist destinations. India just isn't.
Stop comparing China and India. There is no comparison.

What is your point here. Your title says STOP COMPARING CHINA and INDIA and that is precisely what YOU have done !

China opened up their economy much earlier than India did. Therefore, quite similar to being unfair to compare 2 long distance runners whose start time isn't the SAME, it is also unfair to compare China and India.

As you yourself stated, anybody (read MEDIA) can massage their data to suit their needs. And I am sure that is exactly what happens in these kind of comparisions.

you do not might want to apologise on your question my expensive for it truly is an quite smart question. There are 2 tremendous means contained in the international @ the on the spot & they are merely taking it very very cool & they are China & India and China is the further powerfull one in each way that you'll imagine of, for on the spot, China have the adult males & they are properly prepare & maximum of all China is spreading there welth international huge & they are noticeably intelligent smart & very rish. As I talk, China own the U S. in the experience that they opt for, to call the chips in, u . s . might want to have a difficult time to pay there charges to the Chinies, plus they own a huge peace of the united statesA. Then the Caribbean. China has were given a similar effect contained in the Caribbian, and the socal Leaders there do no longer know or they do no longer needs to entice close that they are giving the Caribbian away so like I say China is on suited contained in the international. Then the Indian, Inda have the adult males and also they are properly educated yet they are purely educated to defind Inda and & any the position else yet they do no longer have the money as yet, and if there is any ingredient with China & everybody elsc they could might want to deal with India as well & visa versa, because they both might want to artwork like the Europions so do not imagine that you would possibly want to be coping with purely one. Now Russian, Russia has some money no longer a lot, contained in the authorities yet contained in the non-public sector, properly they have some Millionair over there sinc the country is changed so they the authorities does no longer have the money & i do no longer know how meny adult males they have & i do no longer how a lot preparation those adult males has so i does no longer positioned them contained in the means mix in any respect. Then the SOCAL undesirable AMERICAN, they don't seem all that undesirable or rich as everybody imagine they are, they could be able to print those money yet it truly is so a lengthy way as they is going. u . s . does no longer have the adult males to maneger the invation AKA conflict that they began around the globe by no potential options yet another one so they are no the position close to pow by no potential options superpower. So there is your answerer my expensive that is taks a lengthy time period to ans. you besides the undeniable fact that it might want to no longer be ans. in 2 words so there you're!.

Because China and India both have large populations and are making great strides in business and industries and have great potential to become world powers, people compare them.

In regards to the other topics (religion, culture, etc.), I personally have not seen the two being compared much at all. When speaking about culture, China is most often compared to Japan and Korea. Oh, and Buddhism came from India, so there definitely is a connection of religion between India and China, even though Hinduism is more dominant in modern India.

It appears as though you are more angered with people who compare them and say good things about India, rather than everyone who compares them. This whole rant is simply your way of saying that China is better than India. How ethnocentric (or Sinocentric) of you.

India and China are both hot topics in regards to a possible shift of economic power in the world. Why is that so hard to deal with? China may be advancing faster, but that doesn't mean India shouldn't be mentioned at all...

You must be a Chinese as you sounded very angry when people say good things about India and not China. Stop comparing those 2 countries YOURSELF and be more mature. I have lived in China for 3 years and frankly, it has it's good and bad points. Period.

Tell u what...India has something that CHINA will have only in its DREAM. "REAL PEOPLE'S DEMOCRACY". We do not have any Tianenmen squares either.

As Udayan Mukerjee stated, India has INFOSYS, china does NOT.

India has banks that are fundamentally sound, china does NOT.

The list could go on and on, but for me, "REAL PEOPLE's DEMOCRACY" alone is enough to outweigh ALL of CHINA's positives listed by anyone.
