Philippines was colonized by Spain a long, long time ago.
The primary languages used are "Tagalog" & English (American) and also there are a lot of local dialects. Some speak Chinese particularly the Filipino-Chinese, & Some speaks Spanish (Which are rare nowadays). Yeah, there are lots of Filipinos bearing Hispanic Family names due to the Spanish heritage.Spain culture is indeed a big influence by the Filipinos. (- -,)

The Philippines was colonised by the Spanish, then was acquired by the US from the Spanish in 1898 following the Spanish-American War. The National language is Tagalog though there are many local dialects and languages. English is the primary language for education and government. Many of the Spanish settlers intermarried with the native Filipino population which give the Filipinos the Hispanic names you see today.

I have three Filipino kids. They speak English well. Their mom has command of English and a dialect called Visayan of the Filipino language.

Tagalog (tah GAH low) is the most popular language in the Philippines. They all study English. If you are from the south part or some of the smaller islands you may speak a dialect other than Tagalog. There are over 200 dialects.

Spain conquered the Philippines around the 1800's. That's the direct influence.

first: it's Philippines...a country.

It was Spain who colonized the Philippines that sent Ferdinand Magellan, a Portuguese navigator.

Primary language is Tagalog/Pilipino and English is the secondary language. But Philippines, being an archipelago had over 200 local dialects.

The Spaniard Colonization lasted for about 333 years bringing with them Christianity, so most inhabitants were baptized with Hispanic last names.

There.

the philippines was colonized by spain. filipinos speak PILIPINO, of course, or tagalog. it 's the same thing. but our second language is english. during the spanish colonization, most filipinos were urged or forced to be baptized, hence, the hispanic last names. it was ferdinand magellan who came to the philippines to spread christianity and to colonize the island. he is said to be a portuguese but worked under the spanish flag.
