If you're a true newbie, that is, you have no knowledge of weight training at all and no idea of what you might be able to lift safely, I'd strongly encourage you to seek the help of a personal trainer. That person will help you find the right exactly the right weight level to stress your muscles safely and effectively. You'll be sore after your first couple of workouts, but you will start noticing muscle tone and increased strength. In addition, your body will start sculpting itself very nicely.

Don't go into an environment like a gym and just start lifting weights without any knowledge of which muscles you're working or any clue of what you're trying to accomplish. That's a good way to injure yourself. Start slow, work with a trainer to get a plan, stick with it, add weight as it becomes easier, and you'll be fine. Do it correctly and you'll be very pleased with the results. Good luck!
