I'm thinking about getting a HyTek Big Button Universal Remote for my grandparents, but I was wondering if you someone here could help me out with a question that I have? Here's a good picture of the remote:

As you can see, the navigation arrows (in blue) are on the Play, FF, and Rewind buttons. The fact that the arrows are blue seems to indicate that it's only to be used for Satellite (which is also blue on the remote).

Does this mean that this remote doesn't have DVD navigation? Or does it mean that a shift key (which I don't see) will have to be pressed in order to use the arrows for the DVD function? As far as I can tell if I were to hit the up arrow in DVD mode the disc would just start playing.

My mom is over 80 and I finally talked her into trying a DVD player. She doesn't even consider using the nav keys. All she does is watch the movie -- I bet that's all your grandparents would do, too.

It looks like the mfg thinks that it can handle all of the DVD players (from their feature list), so I don't think it's a problem.

You might consider a programmable remote with macros so you can set up a button that turns on the TV, surround sound (if necessary), and plays the DVD with a single press. Most have several macro buttons available, so you could set it up to do everything they need with just a couple of button presses. I bet they'd find that far more useful than a bunch of big buttons on a new remote.

If it is too confusing for you, imagine your grandparents predicament. Get them one of the earlier models that are so basic they are easy! They have all the options and give out bingo numbers too!
