Does anyone have a dog who has to live off of chicken and rice because of allergies? What supplements are they on? Has it worked out ok? Any info would be great. Thanks!

Chicken and rice isn't balanced. You also need to add in organs as well, bones, and a couple of eggs a week, preferably with shell as they are loaded with calcium.

Rice is just a filler, dogs get no nutrition from it, and chicken alone isn't balanced.

Raw diets often work great for dogs with allergies since you control the exact ingredients in your dogs foods. You just need to know what your dog is allergic too. Checkout rawdogs, over http://www.livejournal.com great community, loads of info.

Are you sure its a food allergy? Dogs can be allergic to grass, carpet, pollen, pretty much anything we can be allergic to.

Try also switching to a food without corn, wheat, or soy in it as these are the biggest food allergen offenders. Innova Evo and Canidae are a couple of good ones.

Only living on chicken and rice is not balanced. Surely you can find other protein sources besides just chicken. Turkey, pork, lamb, beef, eggs, fish (canned and fresh), and I even saw ground bison in Wal-Mart (it's nearly $5 a pound though) are all relatively easy to attain. Goat and rabbit aren't impossible to find either. You can also feed foods like Innova EVO 95% venison or 95% rabbit (my dogs get this once a week as an alternate protein source). Don't forget organ meats like kidney and gizzards. You can also give yogurt for digestion and cottage cheese. I do a little supplementing, but I try to not go too overboard (ester C, vitamin E, and fish oil are about it for me).

My dog has several allergies and is currently on Honest Kitchen Preference, http://www.thehonestkitchen.com/preference.htm a dehydrated food consisting of fruits, veggies and herbs. It is protein free and grain free-the two most common allergens in dogs. We supplement the food with ground buffalo meat and eggs.

As far as supplements go, we use MSM from Solid Gold http://www.solidgoldhealth.com/products/showproduct.php?id=30&code=552 and Probiotics from Animal Essentials http://www.cart4sites.com/Merchant2/merchant.mv?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=animalessentials&Product_Code=Enzy100&Category_Code=Merr

My dog was on Sicence Diet ZD Ultra, their allergy formula for 3 years but his allergies weren't improving. We switched to the Prefrence in December. I've just added the probiotics this week. I have noticed that when he gets into things he's not supposed to have his itching gets worse.

They're finding that more and more dogs are developing allergies to chicken, beef, lamb and pork as well as wheat, rice and potatoes. I've eliminated all of these from my dog's diet. I've also taken him to an animal allergist and had him allergy tested. While they can't test for food allergies, they did test for a variety of enironemetnal ones. He's allergic to tree and grass pollens, dust and human dander as well as feathers. I had to get rid of all my down pillows and comforter and keep my house well dusted and vaccumed.

Many vets are not trained in dog allergies and holistic treatments. I'm basically going on trial and error since the food the vet recommended didn't seem to be helpful. I've done some research and shop at a great botique style shop where all the employees are very knowlegeable and they only carry top quality products.

Aside from his alleriges my dog is a very healthy dog. He's very active and competes in aglity, racing and flyball. He's also a medical alert service dog so it's in my best intrest to spend the money on him to keep him in optium health.

I don't know if you mean dog food or home made food. I feed my dog cooked chicken, brown rice and veggies along with Missing Link with omega 3 & 6 which is a supplement. I mix this with lamb and rice California Nataral dog food. She has been eating this food for a year and the thing I noticed is that she has more energy and her coat is healthier. If its just dog food you want to feed your dog there are a lot of high qualty dog foods that are chicken and rice which well balanced for your dog.

Yes my Dalmatian dog was on chicken and rice when he was sick and it held him very good. I am only adding Dogmor Wellness Programme (gravy) and he is enjoying his food

Nope. But I have a crazy story. My dog got locked in my house once and ate a chicken. He had to go to the vet because the of the bones. But he survived.

Not chicken & rice but lamb & rice. My little Maltese had to have it his entire life. But he lived twice as long as they said he would.

GOOD LUCK TO YOU
