I'm with you, Nero has really turned into a buggy peice of crap. My new fave is Roxio media creator 9, but there are a lot of free burning programs out there. Go to doom9.net and click downloads, and in the text you will see full download page in red. Click it and look through the list. I'm sure that there is atleast one free one there.

You do not actually need a program if you have XP, it is built in. Just put the blank disc in, and go to my computer open the CD, and put the files you want to burn there. On the top left, there should be an option to "Write these files to CD" click that once you have finished adding the files and it will burn it.

Use simple programs like Windows Media Player or Real Player. If you want to know how to take off copy-protection, use AnyDVD it takes of CD and DVD protection in seconds. But don't download it from a website. They only give you a free trial. Get it from Limewire, there is a few cracked programs of AnyDVD on Limewire. But if you do get Limewire, download Limewire Pro 4.12 from Limewire it self. There is already cracked ones on there. Don't have to pay to buy the Pro. Your connections will be faster.
