I'm looking for resources and tips on teaching yourself oil painting. I like the look of oil paintings and I think it would be a nice hobby to take up. Thanks.

I have been painting for forty-five years (strictly oils) so I know a thing or two which will benefit a beginner. If you like oil paintings work with oil; not acrylic or anything else because you cannot learn to oil paint with another medium. Get some basic instruction. That point is very important. You only have one lifetime to do this and believe me you do not have any time to waste! The faster you learn the rules the better you will be at breaking them. Here is one guy who teaches the right way.
Ethan Semmel
I suggest you look him up and get some useful tips before you go off on your own developing bad habits. I wish you all the best.

Do as i did. I am a self taught artist and learned to paint with oils by checking out just about every book in my neighborhood library. Some may suggest starting out with acrylic but if oils is what you want to do then go for it. Just read the safety instructions on the mediums you use and keep your area clean. I do my painting on the kitchen table but place a poster board under my easle and when i'm done i wipe the area down. If you would like to check my posted artwork go to hellosanantonio.com and look for artist name ''Guerro''. If i taught myself to work with oils you can too. If i can answer any more questions for you feel free to e-mail me from the site, also feel free to leave a comment regarding my art.

Tip number one would be skip the oils and try acrylics first. They're cheaper and clean up with water. There's no point being exposed to the solvents required for oil painting until you get some experience with mixing color and brush work. There are some great books available for beginning to paint. Have fun with it!
