hi there

Trust me its the perfect age. You are old enough to focus and understand what you are doing plus you are still young and supple enough for high kicks. Learning a martial art at such an early age is a bit of an old wife's tale as most children pack it in before they reach there teens anyway. And most good instructors shouldn't be teaching dynamic stretching to youngsters as their bones and muscles are still developing. Trust me i didn't start until I was your age and i was doing the box splits at 23. The hardest part is finding a good club in your area. Check out your local sports centres and the Internet for established dojos. Some arts are striking arts like Karate and Tae Kwon Do others grappling such as Jujutsu and Akido.

Remember its like buying a new pair of shoes. Shop around for the best pair and if they feel uncomfortable try on another pair. All good clubs should allow you to watch and will probably let you have your first lesson for free.

Hope this helps ;)

Regards

Idai

I think karate would be better for you at this point as some Kung-fu is pretty athletic and acrobatic in nature and karate would avoid that to a large extent while giving you a total body workout using both your upper and lower body. I will also tell you the same thing I tell anyone that I take as a student that is overweight and out of shape. It did not take just a day or a week to put that weight on and get out of shape so it will not take just a day or week to get it off or get back into shape. It is a building process so keep that in mind and you have taken the first step in doing something about it and that is to try and change it. Just keep on taking those steps-one at a time and you will get there. Look for a good traditional karate class or program; most stress some physical conditioning along with teaching martial arts. Always go and watch a few classes, talk to the students and the instructors before joining or signing anything and if any have a trial program without a contract consider them and trying things out. DO NOT sign anything with blanks in it or the instructor says that they can fill that in later. There was a question last month about an unscrupulous instructor that did just that after the person signed it and now they are paying and locked in on a contract that they don't want. Picking a karate or martial arts program and school is like buying a car and it pays to shop so that you can make the best choice.

I've just started and I'm only 19 but I'm doing it without a instructor so it going slow but i dint have the time or the money so it all been research, my advice is don't do it this way, I've ended up out of action for a few days so don't over do it, know your limits and don't go to far but do try a little bit past. Try and discard what doesn't work if you practice on or two moves over and over for a couple weeks and you don't like the feel of it don't use it but i would sagest that you learn and practice it so that you have gotten it down so you can do it well and understand it but get a TEACHER...
I hope this helps some.

Hi,

You are perfect age to take up Martial Arts. First off open you rmind to learning. You sounded a little negitive there a minute. Secondly what disipline interests you? What Culture interests you?Do you enjoy reading about Karate, Japan, Or do you feel you are more interested in China Land of Mystery, different styles of Kung Fu and Wushu Arts. Do you want to just take an easy Teakwondo class and get familiar with fighting arts. Itws all up to you. But do find a place to study thats clean and safe and has a respectable Sifu-Sensei. and is affordable.

So go already find out what you like and study, but do apply yourself to it and be well disiplined or you will not learn.

A good well rounded style would be freestyle Karate. You will learn stand up,ground, grappling and weapons. What a lot of people don't understand is that freestyle Karate is about practical street defence not who can kick the highest or punch a pad the hardest. It's definitely not a sport martial art like TKD or BJJ.The motto of my style is the best of everything in progression.Basically that means we don't care where the technique comes from we improve it and integrate it into our style while still maintaining tradition as do most freestyle Karate's.
The hardest thing is finding a good experienced instructor.I would recommend Bushi Kai or Zen Do Kai, but if your not in Australia or New Zealand you may have some difficulty finding some one who teaches these styles. These styles also usually have separate classes available to everyone in Muay Thai and BJJ/Submission/Shoot wrestling. If you can't find one of these i would suggest Kempo or Enshin or another freestyle Karate.

It's never too late to learn martial arts. There are like 30-50 year old white belts in my taekwondo classes. Just find a good teacher and you'll be fine.

Yesterday, I had a tel. call from 71 years old gentlemen wishing to start practicing karate in my club. And I would say that 17 is the best age to start building a martial arts base. Visit d-dojo.org. Good luck. Igor

there's nothing to say you have to learn martial arts as a child - that's just silly. I started when I was 25. you just have to decide what art appeals to you and find yourself a good teacher.
