My cat is 20 yrs old, but she is in great health. She tends to do these weird meows when (she thinks) no one is around. If you were to walk into the room where she is she quits. They are so LOUD...you can hear them outside. but she is not in pain (we hope). Why would she do this...

i would tend to think that she is wondering where you are. when a cat calls her kittens to her, she makes a low, loud (especially if she cant find the kitten) sound that goes kind of like...meee-rrrrr...in some cats it is deeper voiced to sound like....mooo-rrr or muuu-rrrr. if her hearing and sight is fading or her people sre gone/quiet too long...she may become concerned and begin to wonder if she is alone. also i have a blind kitten that makes the same sound when i am too quiet and she begins to suspect i have left without telling her...she has this fear she will be left at the vets yet again...how she hates when i leave her.

if u r concerned about the possibility of pain, have a vet examine her...but you can tell from certain signs yourself...does she slash her tail or jerk it...when you touch or pet her does her skin flinch...does she meow or grunt when you pick her up? look at her teeth, are her gums white or pink...if white she needs to see a vet asap....it is a sign of systemic shock and/or internal bleeding. when she uses the litter box, does she act like she is going to go pee or poop, but dont? she may have a bladder infection or be constipation. these thoughts at least may give you some ideas....i lean towards her calling you...and when you appear, she quits, because u came when she called. give her an overdose of affection and reassurances...she has lived this long because you have taken such good care of her...just up the dose of love and let her know she is not alone.

This cat is very old. I have a long history in my family of animals and the oldest cat was 18, that is old too. So, though you may not think she is in pain, you can't know. she can't tell you. Take her to the vet and find out, he should be able to tell you if she has any tender areas, any growths inside that he can feel and you can't see. If you love her you don't want her to suffer not fro a minute , not to that point. There has to be a reason for this. Good luck. I will pray for you and do the right thing for the great friend you have had for many years.

How did you think up this question? You will probably make a good scientist or engineer. Your question shows you look at things that most people overlook, don't even think about. Hmm, since male cats have more testosterone than female cats, their male secondary sex characteristics should be more pronounced than a females. If their vocal folds are such a characteristic, as they are in humans, I would assume they would be more pronounced, i.e., heavier and thicker making a deeper or lower pitched sound.

I believe she is calling for you. My son's cat would do that whenever he left the house, even if other people were still here. It would do that again shortly before he was due home from school. The sound of the cat's voice is different when he is searching for my son than when he is requesting water, or meowing for some other purpose.

Because of her age, she may be confused. She could be in pain. I had a cat that I had to have put to sleep at the age of 21 and she did the same thing.

I had a cat who would go find an empty room and do that. I thinkshe just like the way it sounded or felt to do it. She only did it when she though no one was around. She especially liked to do it in the hall which had good acoustics.

hmmm... I would take her to get checked up... for everything from parasites to kidney stones. Meowing like that is not normal... I am thinking heartworm? Hope not. I think a blood test will rule that terrible disease out. Take your grandamme kitty to the vet... she really may be in pain.

Your cat may be in pain, even if you cant see how. It could also have dementia, which makes it confused and frightened. Sounds like you should have it checked by a vet, just to make sure it's not suffering.

I've only heard this when cats are in heat...and only around that time.
Its not uncommon, I hear neighborhood cats who are going at it, have low meow's, lol. Seriously;)

Maybe she's lonely? As long as you know she's not in pain, she's probably doing it for attention....Good Luck
