what kind of pound? kill or no kill
it may have a low cost spay program. and males are always cheaper then a female to fix. and his size it should be pretty cheap.not over 100.
also so for marking males i use vinigar and water 50/50 mix or stronger house smells like pickle but its worse for the dogs nose then ours. i see u have a baby pic so if ya got a baby its safe to use around kids...i srub all my carpets with it it works better then the shampoo they sale and it don't clog the sprayer. and i don't have to worry bout any alergy probs pet or kid.(not as strong mix no markers here) also u need to catch him in the act. and stop and put out side...him being the only male is most likely the problem.
i hope that helps...
or look on petfinder.com for more shelters or call ur shelter sometimes they have ppl who are looking for that kind of dog on a list..so that if any come in that person wants to know right away. good luck.

Since there are no rescues near by check with local vets for local breedesr that may be close to you.. most are willing or have a list of people waiting to adopt or are willing to take in dogs that need fixed and need some house manners taught. The local vets themselves may know of a family willing to take in a dachsund that needs a home. I would do that before the pound. Some pounds or animal shelters ran by a city or county put dogs down that are taken in by owners instead of trying to place them. Local Humane societies may be better they are usually better at hanging on to a pet that they believe would be a good pet for a family and adpoting them out...

Get on Petfinder.com contact the rescue closest to you. Many are willing to drive or meet you somewhere to pick them up. The lifting of the leg is a dominance thing. He doesn't see you as the leader of the pack and feels free to claim anything as his...Some behavior training will fix this issue (as will neutering him). Give some rescues some calls. You will be surprised.

Try putting an add in the paper under found, but say if no one claims will take phone number to place in good home. And if that doesnt work take him to the pound. They have to do tests on the dog to make sure he's not aggressive and if he is, then you really wouldnt want to place him in a home anyways. You could always leave your name and number with the pound to have them contact you if no one adopts the dog:)

I wouldn't think you'ld have any trouble at all finding a good home for him. Place a small ad in your paper or a flyer up at community boards at your grocery store. Also, call around to vets. They may know of someone who would LOVE to have a male dachsund.

It would be sad for him and you for him to go to the pound. I don't know where you live, but is South Australia lots of the council areas run once a year free spaying days. You could check with your council.
I think most of his problems could be fixed by getting him spayed.
Good Luck. If it was me I would find a way to make it work.

Maybe you can have him trained or do it yourself. He's probably a little upset over being dumped/homeless and it is affecting his personality. Talk to your vet about his problems. Also, your vet may know someone who would take him or at least help you find him a good and loving home. I know my vet posts doggy ads in his office.

The reason the female is behaving so well is because the male has already claimed leadership of the household. His lifting his leg around the house is showing that dominance. The best way to go about correcting this behavior is to first take him for a nice long walk. You walking him. Not him walking you. From the moment you leave the house, you are in control. You leave first, followed by him, and for the entire walk he must remain by your side or behind you, never in front of you. If he starts to go in front, give him a quick but firm tug on the leash and make an assertive "sshhtt!" sound. This will direct his attention to you and tell him that he's showing unacceptable behavior. If you can claim your leadership back on the walk, then it will be that much easier to claim it back inside. Once you've taken him for a nice long walk to get out all his extra energy, (this should really be done at least twice a day for 45 minutes with both dogs) this will make him easier to correct. When you get home, again, you go into the house first, followed by him. This establishes that it's your house, not his, you're only welcoming him to stay there. Firstly, you have to claim your house back. This means he isn't allowed to jump on you or your furnature without you asking him to. If he tries to jump, simply push him down, if he gets on the couch, don't pull him down, but instead, using calm and assertive energy, with confident body posture, stay on the couch but move toward him, use your fingers to give him a little nudge on the butt and tell him down. If he doesn't get down, give him another nudge, and again until he gets down. If he jumps on a different couch, claim that back as well. If he decides to get snippy with you, using your hand as a mouth and your fingers as teeth, press them firmly against his neck and push him down so that he's laying on his side. (this can be done either on the floor or on the couch) Once he's there, he may give out a fit in protest, be it squirming or thrashing around, whining or yelping, it's important that you don't pull away. With your hand on his neck it makes it impossible for him to bite you, regardless of how hard he may try, once he realizes this he may try to yelp to startle you into backing away, but if you do this, you're only showing him weakness. Hold him there until he has calmed down into a submissive state and will stay there without you holding him. Once this is done, give him a nice firm massage so that he knows good calm and submissive behavior is rewarded, while negative behavior will no longer be tollerated. Once you regain your dominant status over him, he'll stop claiming his territory inside the house. But if you see him lift his leg, again, move to him, touch him on the side of the neck with your index and middle fingers and give him the "sshhtt!" sound. Don't let him outside right away, he can hold it, he wasn't going because he had to, he was going to leave his mark. Make him settle down in a calm state and then bring him out. I really hope you're able to regain control over this pup, he has potential to be a great dog, he just needs some guidence on how to get there. The important thing to keep in mind is that dogs require three things to live a stable, happy and healthy life, both physically and mentally. Proper walks for the expelling of pent up energies. Proper discipline for unacceptable behaviors. And proper affection for good behaviors. Best of luck to you!

try contacting your local humane shelter. ask them how much it would be to spay and neuter the 2. they usually have a low cost facility.

if you must give them away, post some signs at your local pet store, paper or craigslist.

You could try re-homing him yourself or you could start using a crate for him and when he starts to mark in the house correct him. It sounds like the male needs a little training and disipline. I am adding a link for a low cost option for spaying and neutering the dogs that will help curb marking.
