Neither country is a particular threat to the USA (I assume thats what you mean by democracy) at the current time. Yes they are biting in to your position as the sole economic and miltary superpower. However that does not make them enemies to democracy.

Additionally German industry and manpower after WW2 was near completely destroyed and so would have been a rather useless ally.

If you have ever read history you will have observed that no-one has ever conquered China since the frist emporer of the Qing dynasty unified the majority of modern China. America did not and does not have enough nukes to destroy China. Merely destroying a few cities would not harm China greatly, however the resulting fallout would harm the USA and the rest of the world almost as much as China. See Chernobyl.

Neither China nor Russia count among the world's greatest threat to democracy these days.

Sure, post-WWII the former Soviet Union was... but it doesn't exist any more, they lost the cold war.

Ironic that those guerillas & insurgents we're battling in Afghanistan today (and their leader, Osama Bin Laden) were armed & trained by the USA back in the 1970's to fight the Soviet Union- we didn't want the communists gaining a foothold there. Now those kinds of folks ARE among the world's greatest threat to democracy.

Hmmm--let generals, who are NOT elected officials, decide the fate of milliions of people. Yeah, that sounds VERY democratic.

If we went around and attacked and/or nuked everyone who didn't agree with us, who the hell would be left? I think the greatest threat to democracy is people who want to eliminate anyone who opposes their ideas.
