First rent a drum sander and an edge sander from your local rental station. Sand all your floors down to BARE WOOD. First sand with a 60 grit sandpaper until you get close to bare wood. Then with an 80 grit pass. Then 120 grit. Clean entire floor thoroughly vaccuming and wiping. Then stain your floor using a brush or wiping method. Clean floor again after stain is dry. Then use a floor polyurethane to finish coat. Apply with lambs wool applicator. 2-3 coats.

Have to sand off old finish first. Most hardware stores or tool rental places will rent you a floor sander for pretty reasonable. Think I paid $35 for full day. They usually can tell you the procedure and how to use it too. Clean up all the dust afterward, put on the stain then when dry, put a clear sealer on it. Thats about it.

Since you are going to be using a dark color, your job is easier....
Sand the surface first thoroughly to remove old varnish if a big area, rent a sanding machine). The previous applications must be completely removed. Clean all dust then apply stain with roller or brush, dry and top coat if wanted with a good varnish.
Good luck!!

Hire a contractor to do it. Completely stripping and refinishing a floor is quite a job and very messy.
