I'm comparing this hymn with a modern day worship song, and what is this overall idea of the hymn?

I would just sum it up as saying it is in praise to Jesus Christ for helping one to repent and be found worthy of being forgiven through the Atonement "He, to rescue me from (spiritual) danger, Interposed His precious blood." Maybe the theme would be "gratitude."

It brings several verses to mind:
"For with Thee is the Fountain of Life,
In Thy Light we see light."
(Psalm 36:9)
"Therefore will you joyously draw water from the springs of salvation."
(Isaiah 12:3)
"Whoever drinks of the water that I shall give him will never thirst; but the water that I shall give him shall become in him a well of water springing up to eternal life."
(John 4:14)
"Every good thing bestowed, and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shifting shadow."
(James 1:17)
